Oregon State Hosts NCAA Championships at Sunriver

Corvallis, Ore. - SCHEDULE: The 19th annual NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships will be held May 24-27 at the Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore. The 72-hole event features 18 holes each day. The first round is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, with afternoon rounds beginning at 1:30 p.m. The top four scores from each five-member team will count towards the team total for that day.
TELEVISION: Live second and third round action will be televised live by ESPN2 from Noon-2 p.m. PDT. Saturday's fourth round will be tape delayed for Sunday broadcast via ESPN2, time is to be determined.
THE COURSE: The Crosswater Golf Club is located near the Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon. The course will play to 6,502 yards and carry a par of 72.

THE FIELD: The field has been expanded to 24 teams this year, plus six individuals. The following is a brief sketch of this year's field:
Arizona: The Wildcats won the NCAA West Regional at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., with a 54-hole total of 876...Arizona is No. 2 in the latest Golfweek Poll (May 16)...senior Jenna Daniels is the No. 1 ranked individual in Division I...Arizona won the 1996 NCAA title and finished second in 1988 and `92...Arizona won the Pac-10 Championship by eight shots, with Daniels placing second and sophomore Cristina Baena third -- Daniels shot a tournament low 68 the final round...Daniels, Baena, and senior Jill Gomric were three of the six members of the Pac-10 All-Conference First Team.
Arizona State: Arizona State is ranked No. 4 in the nation by Golfweek...placed fourth at the NCAA West Regional at 25-over 889...also placed fourth at last autumn's OSU Fall Preview at Crosswater at 891...Miriam Nagl won the Fall Preview at 5-under 211...Nagl, who is ranked third in the nation by Golfweek, won last week's West Regional at 7-under 209 -- she led from start to finish...Nagl was selected to the Pac-10 All-Conference First Team and 2000 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year...Nagl finished in the top-10 in 10 tournaments.
Auburn: The Tigers tied for seventh at the East Regional at 907, and won the Southeastern Conference Championship...Golfweek has Auburn ranked No. 12 in the nation, with freshman Celeste Troche No. 15 and freshman Danielle Downey No. 24...this is the fifth consecutive appearance for Auburn in the NCAA Championships, and seventh overall...Troche, who was third at the East Regional, was the 2000 SEC Freshman of the Year...Troche and Downey were both named to the All-SEC First Team, the first players in school history to garner first team honors...Downey won three tournaments this season, and senior Kami Smith has one title...Downey will also be participating in next month's US/Japan Matches.
Duke: The Blue Devils won the NCAA East Regional played at the Scarlet Course at Ohio State...Duke shot 897 for three rounds, including 295 over the final 18 to come from a six stroke deficit...the number one ranked team in the Golfweek poll (May 16)...sophomore Beth Bauer led Duke at the Regional, finishing fourth at 2-over 218...Bauer is the second ranked player in the nation, according to Golfweek...Duke won the NCAA Fall Preview at Crosswater last September with an 878 total, four shots in front of second place Southern California...Duke, this year's ACC champion, won its first-ever NCAA women's golf title last year.
Florida: Florida was the last team from the East Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championships, shooting 915...the Gators tied for fifth at the Southeastern Conference Championships...the team is ranked No. 33 in the nation by Golfweek...Paula Marti is ranked No. 34 by Golfweek...Florida won the 1985 and `86 NCAA titles, and placed second in `98...the Gators team at the Championships consists of four freshmen and one junior.
Georgia: Georgia tied for ninth at the NCAA East Regional, and placed fourth at the Southeastern Conference Championships...the Bulldogs were sixth at the OSU Fall Preview at Crosswater last fall...Shauna Estes is No. 8 in the nation, according to Golfweek, with Laura Henderson No. 35, and Angela Jerman No. 46...Georgia finished second at the NCAA Championships in 1988 and `99...Estes was named the SEC Player of the Year, with Henderson and Jerman earning all-conference honors...this will be head coach Beans Kelly's final tournament at Georgia, she has resigned.
Louisiana State: The Tigers were fifth at the NCAA East Regional at 902...LSU is ranked No. 7 in the nation by Golfweek...Golfweek also ranks Tiger players sophomore Meredith Duncan No. 19, sophomore Tina Howard No. 20, and senior Lisette Lee No. 23...LSU was ninth at the OSU Fall Preview at Crosswater, with Lee placing 11th at 222...LSU was second at the SEC Championships...Duncan and Lee were All-SEC First Team picks.
Michigan State: The Spartans placed sixth at the NCAA East Regional, and were second at the Big Ten Championships...MSU is ranked No. 27 in the nation by Golfweek...sophomore Emily Bastel won the Big Ten Title, and in the process earned GolfWorld Magazine's National Player of the Year honor...Bastel is a two-time All-Big Ten First Team member, and was the conference's Freshman of the Year in 1999...junior Kasey Gant was also an All-Big Ten selection.
Nebraska: Nebraska tied for ninth at the NCAA West Regional...sophomore Sarah Sasse tied for 13th to lead the Cornhuskers...Sasse, who was a first team All-Big 12 selection, is ranked No. 43 in the nation...the team placed third in the Big 12 Championships...Nebraska is ranked No. 26 in the nation.
New Mexico State: NMSU was the final school to qualify for the NCAA Championships out of the West Regional...the team finished 13th at 901, five shots in front of 14th place UCLA...the team is ranked No. 9 in the nation by Golfweek... senior Gwladys Nocera placed tied for 15th at the Regional at 5-over 221, including a 2-under 70 in round two...Nocera is ranked No. 29 in the nation, while teammates freshman Alena Sharp is No. 36, and junior Sasha Medina is No. 42...the team won the Big West Conference title...head coach Joann Cox was named the conference's Coach of the Year, while Nocera, Sharp, and Medina earned first team all-conference...Medina will also be participating in next month's US/Japan Matches.
Northwestern: The Wildcats placed tied for second in the NCAA East Regional at 900, three shots back of Duke...the team is ranked No. 31 in the nation, and finished tied for sixth at the Big Ten Championships...sophomore Emily Gilley and freshman Elizabeth Burden were named to the All-Big Ten Conference First Team.
Ohio State: The Buckeyes tied for ninth at the East Regional, and tied for sixth at the Big Ten Championships...the team is ranked No. 30 in the nation by Golfweek...OSU was 12th at the Oregon State Fall Preview at Crosswater in September...senior Lisa Strom, an All-Big Ten Conference pick, was co-medalist at the East Regional at even-par 216.
Oklahoma: The Sooners were 12th at the NCAA West Regional at 900...sophomores Jennifer James and Jennifer Tannehill led Oklahoma at the Regional, tying for 27th at 224...the Sooners won the Big 12 title, with James finishing second.
Oregon: The Ducks were seventh at the NCAA West Regional at 895, and seventh at the Pac-10 Championships...junior Jerilyn White and senior Anika Heuser tied for 21st at the Regional at 7-over 223 to lead UO...Oregon is ranked No. 22 by Golfweek.
Pepperdine: The Waves were eighth at the NCAA West Regional at 898...ranked No. 5 in the nation...freshman Katherine Hull led the Waves at the Regional, tying for 21st at 7-over 221... junior Tamie Durdin is ranked No. 6 in the nation, and finished tied for third at the OSU Fall Preview at Crosswater last September...Pepperdine tied for 17th at the Fall Preview as a team...head coach Laurie Gibbs was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year for the third straight time...Durdin, Hull, and Lindsey Wright were all WCC First Team selections, and Wright added Freshman of the Year honors to her resume.
Purdue: The Boilermakers tied for second at the NCAA East Regional with Big Ten rival Northwestern...the team led through the first two rounds of the Regional...the team won the Big Ten title...Purdue is ranked No. 18 in the nation, and senior Stacy Orschell is ranked No. 48 in the country...freshman Kari Damron was co-medalist at the East Regional at even-par 216...Orschell was named the Big Ten Conference's MVP, and Damron was selected to the all-conference team and Freshman of the Year.
San Jose State: The Spartans finished second at the NCAA West Regional...sophomore Rebecka Heinmert tied for fourth at the Regional at 2-under 214, which included a 4-under 68 in the second round...junior Georgina Simpson is the top ranked Spartan in the Golfweek Poll, at No. 26...the team is ranked No. 11 in the nation...the program has won three NCAA titles, and finished second four times...Spartan head coach Nancy Lewis was named the WAC Coach of the Year...the team won three team titles during the season...Simpson, junior Jessica Krantz, and sophomore Marcela Leon were named to the All-WAC Team...the team tied for 13th at the OSU Preview at Crosswater last October.
Southern California: The Trojans finished third at the NCAA West Regional...the No. 3 ranked team in the nation by Golfweek...freshman Candie Kung finished second at the Regional at 211, including a regional best round of 7-under 65 in round two...Kung, who is the No. 4 ranked individual in the nation, finished second at the OSU Fall Preview in September at Crosswater at 214 -- shot back-to-back rounds of 69 the last two days...Kung was a Pac-10 All-Conference First team pick...the Trojans finished second at the `94 NCAA Championships.
Stanford: Stanford finished sixth at the NCAA West Regional and second at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships...senior Jae Jean Ro and junior Stephanie Keever were the top individuals for the Cardinal at the Regional, tying for 21st...Keever is No. 14 in the nation by Golfweek...Stanford is ranked No. 8 in the nation by Golfweek...tied for seventh at the NCAA Fall Preview.
Tennessee: The Volunteers placed fourth at the NCAA East Regional at 902, and were third at the Southeastern Conference Championships...the team has placed in the top 10 nine times, including two second-place finishes...sophomore Young-A Yang is ranked No. 18 in the nation, and the team is No. 15...Yang tied for second at the SEC Championships, and was a first team all-conference selection.
Texas: The Lady Longhorns tied for ninth at the NCAA West Regional at 899...freshman Jessica Reese finished tied for 15th at the Regional at 5-over 221, including a final round 1-under 71...the team is ranked No. 14 in the nation by Golfweek...the team finished tied for 10th in the OSU Fall Preview last fall, with sophomore Randi Meadows tying for sixth at 220...Meadows shot a final round 69 at the Fall Preview...Meadows and sophomore Kristin Dufour were All-Big 12 Conference First Team selections.
Texas Christian: The Frogs placed fifth at the NCAA West Regional at 28-over 892...senior Angela Stanford tied for fourth at the Regional at 2-under 214...Stanford is ranked No. 5 in the individual Golfweek Poll...the team is ranked No. 17 in the latest Golfweek Poll...TCU finished second in the inaugural NCAA Championship in 1982, and won in 1983...tied for 20th at the OSU Fall Preview.
Tulsa: Tulsa hosted the NCAA Championships last year...the team tied for ninth at the NCAA West Regional at 899...Tulsa has won two tournaments, including the Western Athletic Conference title...sophomore Stacy Prammanasudh tied for 10th at 3-over 219 to lead the Hurricane at the Regional...Prammanasudh is ranked No. 5 in the nation -- she shot a final round 69 at Crosswater during October's Preview...Prammanasudh has placed in the top-5 at six tournaments this season, and has won twice...The sophomore was the 2000 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and was a 1999 NCAA All-American...senior Stacy Rambin and sophomore Dani Mallon were all-conference selections...Tulsa won the 1982 and `88 NCAA title, and has finished second three times.
Wake Forest: The Deacons tied for seventh at the East Regional and second at the ACC Championships...the team is ranked No. 10 by Golfweek...freshman Maria Beautell is ranked No. 30 by Golfweek, and Marta Prieto is No. 37.
THE INDIVIDUALS: Six student-athletes qualified as individuals for the NCAA Championships. From the west are Maria Boden of Oklahoma State (3rd at Regionals/3-under 213), Carrie Summerhays of BYU (6th-tie at Regionals/1-over 217), and Kristen MacLaren of UTEP (9th at Regionals/2-over 218). From the east are Marcy Newton of North Carolina (5th-tie at Regionals/3-over 219), Sharron O'Neill of Campbell (5th-tie at Regionals/3-over 219), and Jennifer Perri of Furman (21st-tie at Regionals/10-over 226). Newton and Summerhays will be participating in the US/Japan Matches next month.
PREVIEW RESULTS: Sixteen of the 24 teams competing in the NCAA Championships participated in the Oregon State Fall Preview at the Crosswater Golf Club Sept. 13-15. Duke won the three-round tournament with a 878 total, four shots better than second place Southern California and Arizona. Miriam Nagl of Arizona State won the individual title at 5-under 211. Nagl shot rounds of 70, 72 and 69. Candie Kung of USC was the only other individual in the 105-player field to finish under par at 214. Five players shot final round 69s, the lowest individual scores for the tournament.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Duke is the reigning NCAA Champion, winning last year's rain-shortened event at the Tulsa Country Club. The title was the first for the Blue Devils. Arizona State has won six team titles, including five of the last seven. San Jose State has three team titles, followed by Florida and Tulsa with two, and Arizona, Miami, TCU, and UCLA with one. There have been no individual repeat winners, ASU's Grace Park was the medalist last year at 4-under 212.
