May 13, 2000
TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Oregon State women's golf season came to a close as the team shot a 314 in the final round of the NCAA West Regional on Saturday for a total of 938 and a 24th-place finish at the par 72 Karsten Golf Course. The Beavers needed to finish in the top 13 to advance to the NCAA Championships, but wound up 37 shots from making the cut.
"It's always a good experience to play in the Regionals," said OSU coach Rise Lakowske, whose teams have now competed in the Regional tournament for seven years in a row. "Hopefully we can take something away from this for next year. We have a lot to learn."
OSU's highest finisher was senior Rachel Borcherts, who concluded her career at OSU with a 15-over-par 231 performance over the three rounds, including a 73 in the second round. The 73 was the lowest score from any OSU golfer this weekend.
Reena Eklund, also a senior, knocked eight strokes off her second-round score with a 77 on Saturday, and finished with a 243. Carina Olsson was perhaps the most consistent scorer for OSU in the tournament, with rounds of 77-78-78 to finish two strokes behind Borcherts with a 233.
True freshman Anne Brooksby finished at 245.
Top-ranked Arizona outdueled San Jose State by five strokes for the team title with a 12-over-par 876, while Miriam Nagl of Arizona State took home the individual title with her 7-under-par 209 performance.
