Opening Round Of West Regional Proves A Challenge For OSU
May 11, 2000
TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Oregon State women's golf team had difficulty adjusting to windy conditions on Thursday afternoon on its way to 23rd place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional at the Karsten Golf Course. OSU needs to finish in the top 13 to advance to the NCAA Championships at Sunriver, Ore., May 24-27.
The Beavers struggled in the face of 25-30 mile-per-hour winds during their first nine, but got their games under control by the end of the round to finish with a score of 320.
OSU head coach Rise Lakowske did not use the wind as an excuse. "What happened was they didn't adjust well to the wind," Lakowske said. "We didn't respond like we should have, but they settled down on the second nine and played well. We've been in this position before, so we should be able to take care of it."
Junior Carina Olsson led OSU with a 42-35--77, good for five-over-par and a tie for 53rd at the par 72 course. Rachel Borcherts shot 80, Reena Eklund 81, and Anne Brooksby shot 82s. Every player lowered her score by at least two strokes on the second nine, including Anne Brooksby, who cut 12 strokes off her front-nine 47.
Oregon State is 14 shots out of 13th place, a deficit Lakowske believes her team can make up over the next two rounds.
"We didn't put badly, and we didn't drive badly, but we didn't adjust to the conditions like the other teams did," said Lakowske, whose team finished 14th at last year's regional. "We finished on a good note with some birdies and some pars, so hopefully that will carry over to tomorrow. We have an 8:30 tee time tomorrow, which is a better time" than OSU's 1:20 time on Thursday. "They're going to have to play well tomorrow, but they can do that."
Tulsa, ranked 17th in the nation, sits atop a packed leaderboard with a six-over-par 294, just two shots in front of No. 1 Arizona. Tulsa got two rounds of 70 from Stacy Prammanasudh and Maiko Senda, who lead Arizona State's Miriam Nagl and TCU's Angela Stanford by one stroke.
