HEAD COACH MIKE KETCHAM ON THE TOURNAMENT: "I feel good about where we're at. I think, in terms of the improvement scale, we have certainly improved right on course with where we want to be at this time. I felt like after Pac-10s, we had somewhat of a mental letdown, and that's to be expected, but I thought what was real important was how we came back from that tournament, and I've seen nothing but positive signs this week. I know the kids are eager and anxious to get back in the swing of things, especially in the NCAA West Regional. The lineup will remain the same, however the individual positions might change a little bit in the lineup."
KETCHAM ON THE RIVERBEND GOLF COURSE: "We don't really know that much about the golf course, and I think that's the way it is for most of the teams that are going to be competing. It's a new golf course, just a couple of years old.
"Fresno State typically holds a Fall event, and they have a three-course rotation that they use each year for their event. However, this golf course is not among the courses in the rotation. Out of the 27 teams in the field, Fresno State will have the distinct advantage. However, it's not going to be one of those deals where teams that have gone to their tournament in the past in the Fall have had a chance to see the golf course, none of us have had a chance.
"What I do know about it is that it's a longer golf course, and it's more of a links-style golf course, probably very similar to Trysting Tree. I know length will be a factor, and I think that fits into our hands very well, we have a very long-hitting golf team.
"The greens are fairly flat and not real undulated, if I'm not mistaken, and I think you're going to see some lower scores. Maybe not as low as what they were at Arizona State, but lower than what they were last week at Stanford. I like that. Our kids aren't afraid to shoot low numbers and they're not afraid to make birdies, and I like our chances. We need to have a good week of practice this week and we'll let the chips fall where they may come Thursday, Friday, and Saturday."
HOW THE REGIONALS WORK: Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine districts, will be conducted May 18-20. The West Region is made up of 27 teams, six from district seven, and 12 from district eight, and nine additional teams from other parts of the country, as well as six individuals. The Central and East regions are composed of teams from their respective districts as well. A total of 30 teams and six individuals (156 players total) will advance to the NCAA Championships in Opelika, Ala., May 31-June 3 at the Grand National Golf Complex.
