CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State has named four student-athletes to honor for their excellent work in academics and athletics for the month of April, it was announced Wednesday by Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart.
Each month during the school year, the Beavers honor a male and female student-athlete for academic achievement and a male and female student-athlete for athletic achievement.
The academic winners for the month of April are Carina Olsson, a junior on the women's golf team, and James Atwood, a senior pitcher in baseball. Olsson is from Sollentuna, Sweden, and has a 3.92 GPA in electrical engineering. Atwood, from Layton High School in Layton, Utah, has a 3.59 GPA in exercise & sport science.
The athletic winners for April are Jenni Jodoin, a junior first baseman in women's softball from North Eugene High School, and Tim Mickelson, a senior golfer from Union High School in San Diego, CA.
Jodoin batted .372 in 15 games in April. She was 16 for 43 with nine RBI and nine runs scored. Her RBI total tied for the team lead for the month, and her run total was second on the team. Of her 16 hits, three were doubles and one was a home run.
Michelson tied an OSU record, shared by Charles Kingsbaker, with his 8-under par 64 (six birdies, an eagle, no bogies) in the third round of the Pacific-10 championships April 24-26 at Arizona State. The 8-under is an OSU record for most shots under par since Kingsbaker's round came on a par 71 course to put him at 7-under. Mickelson set the school record for lowest four-round total with a 13-under 275, and tied the three-round standard shared by Dave Molitor (1972-73) with a 206 over the first three rounds on his way to a second place finish at the Pac-10 championships.
Michelson's efforts helped the Beavers finish second at the Pac-10 championships, OSU's best ever finish. Also during the month of April, Michelson tied for 11th at the Western Open and tied for 20th at the Sun Devil Intercollegiate.
