Women's Golf Qualifies For West Regional

CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State women's golf team earned a birth in the NCAA West Regional Championship, which will be held May 11-13 at the par 72 Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Arizona State University will host the tournament.
OSU qualified 11th out of 13 teams in the Far West District after finishing ninth at the Pacific-10 Championships Apr. 24-26. Eleven teams from the West District will join the 13 from the Far West at the West Regional. Teams from the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic/East District will compete in the East Regional.
Last year Oregon State placed 14th in the West Regional, posting a score of 933 (318-304-311) at the par 72 Pine Forest Country Club in Houston, Tex. Oregon State's best finish in the regional tournament came in 1998, when OSU finished 10th in the West Regional. The Beavers went on to place 16th at the NCAA Championship in 1998.
The Regional Championships are broken down into East and West regions, which consist of schools from each of the five districts in the country. A total of 252 participants will play in regional competition, and of these players, 126 will advance to the championship finals May 24-27 in Sunriver, Ore. The 126 players will be made up of 11 teams and three individuals from each region, with the final two births being allocated to the region with the most teams ranked in the top 24.
Last year, Duke won the NCAA Championship, but overall, Arizona State has four titles, San Jose State three, Florida two, and Arizona, Duke, Miami (Fla.), TCU, Tulsa and UCLA have one each.
