Women's Golf In 11th After First Round Of ASU Invitational
April 7, 2000
TEMPE, Ariz. - - A hole-in-one from Rachel Borcherts combined with a strong short-game performance from the Oregon State women's golf team kept the Beavers within striking distance of the leaders in Friday's first round of the Ping/Arizona State Invitational. OSU is in 11th place after shooting 302 in the first round, but only 14 shots separate the Beavers from top-ranked leader Arizona heading into Saturday's second round.
"We played pretty well," said OSU head coach Rise Lakowske. "We had a couple bad holes, but that can happen. We had to count three double bogies today. We were looking to have a good short game, and we putted well. We just didn't strike the ball well."
The tournament is played on the par 72 Karsten Golf Course, which is similar to the Trysting Tree course that OSU often plays in Corvallis.
"I think we're in a good spot, and we can improve on this score in tomorrow's round," Lakowske said.
Borcherts' first collegiate hole-in-one came on her 16th hole, and she followed that with a birdie on 17 en route to a team-low 74. Stacie Ferguson, a freshman, also carded a 74 for the Beavers to forge a tie with Borcherts in 23rd position overall.
Carina Olsson shot an even-par 35 on her front nine, and finished her round with a 76 to tie for 43rd. Anne Brooksby and Brie Del Bone each carded 78s, and are tied for 64th. Reena Eklund shot an 80 while playing as an individual.
Arizona holds a three shot lead over second place New Mexico after shooting an even-par 288 in the team competition.
Arizona's Jenna Daniels is looking to take medalist honors after carding a 68 to take a two-shot lead over Georgina Simpson of San Jose State and Mikaela Parmlid of Southern California after one round.
Play continues Saturday with 18 holes and will wrap up Sunday with the final 18.
