No. 14 Men's Crew Heads To Wisconsin
April 5, 2000
SCHEDULE: The Oregon State men's crew will race on Lake Mendotta, near Madison, Wis., against No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 18 Michigan in a home race for Wisconsin. OSU will only race one varsity boat, instead of taking a second varsity or JV and Novice crews.
OSU RANKED: The Beavers are ranked 14th in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Poll.
OSU MEN'S COACH DAVE REISCHMAN ON THE RACE: "This is a new race for us, we just added it this year. We've had some problems finding competition on the West Coast. There's a big spread in ability levels of West Coast crews, so traditionally, we've just had two races with Washington and Stanford. Those were the West Coast crews that were challenging. To help us come national championship time, we wanted to add another competitive race. Wisconsin and Michigan are the teams we face this weekend, and Wisconsin is ranked sixth, and Michigan is 18th, so these are two solid crews. It's a chance to add another high-caliber race to our schedule."
LAKE MENDOTTA COURSE ADDS TO WISCONSIN MYSTIQUE: "Wisconsin is one of those programs that is kind of mystical in the sport of rowing," Reischman said. "They've had a lot of success over the course of the last several years. Year in and year out, Wisconsin crews have been very competitive. It's kind of mystical because of where they row. It's tough conditions in that almost year-round, it's cold - it's cold in November and stays cold until June sometimes. Last week it was minus-10 with the windchill there. We expect race temperatures to be in the 30s almost all the time, and because of the travel to Madison, Wisc., you usually have a long layover somewhere. It's hard to get your equipment there, so they're going to loan us a boat. It's a tough, tough trip."
OSU AND WISCONSIN AT SAN DIEGO: OSU and Wisconsin both raced in the San Diego Crew Classic on Apr. 1-2. The Beavers' time of 6:08 was 5.5 seconds off of Wisconsin's time, though the two crews raced in different heats. "It's a good result for us, given the injured person we have out," Reischman said. "We're going to see what we can do about cutting into that margin. We won't be back at full strength yet, it's going to be another couple of weeks before we get our injured rower back. It's a good chance to see where we stand. The plan for us is to show steady improvement through the season. What we're looking to do is cut into that 5.5 seconds that they were ahead of us."
LAST ACTION: OSU's first varsity squad took eighth overall at the San Diego Crew Classic. The team finished second in the Petite Final (places 7-12) with a time of 6:08, just two seconds behind Yale. In the JV Petite Final (places 7-12), OSU was second to Orange Coast College, finishing in 6:11.4. Orange Coast edged the JV by finishing in 6:10.9.
MANN, THAT'S GOTTA HURT: Kevin Mann, a 6-4, 200-pound junior from Corvallis (Corvallis HS), will be on dry land for roughly two weeks with a rib injury. Mann normally rows in the sixth seat, so Reischman has had to make some adjustments. Here is the crew that will race in Wisconsin:
B- Sam Bobek (jr., Warrenton, Ore.) 2- Bryan Reiman (jr., Albany, Ore.) 3- Randell Embertson (sr., Roseberg, Ore.) 4- Joey Hansen (jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) 5- Josh Inman (so., Hillsboro, Ore.) 6- Andy Dietrick (so., Juneau, Alaska) 7- Scott Fortner (sr., Rogue River, Ore.) 8- Andrew Jackson (jr., Corvallis, Ore.) C- Emmy Gardner (So., Springfield, Ore.)
