April 30, 2000
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - - The 15th-ranked Oregon State women's crew took three races from Texas and two from California at the Stanford Invitational on Sunday at Redwood Shores, Calif.
OSU's varsity eight beat Texas by 15.5 seconds as the Beavers posted a season-best time of 6:33.6. The Beavers beat their previous best, which they set yesterday against San Diego State, by roughly nine seconds.
"We finished the weekend strong," OSU coach Charlie Owen said. "We were trying to improve over yesterday, and we achieved that goal. The first varsity had a good race, and they posted a good time, so we were pleased with how that race went."
The second varsity won their race with a time of 6:51.7 to beat Texas by nearly 13 seconds, and the novice eight left Texas in their wake as they won by over 19 seconds in 6:54.1.
"Yesterday, the second varsity rowed a relaxed race, but they had a low stroke rate," Owen said. "Today, we rowed a relaxed race, but we had a better stroke rate, so we improved on that."
OSU beat California in both a varsity four and a novice four race on Sunday as well. The Beaver varsity four cruised to the finish line in 7:51.8, defeating Cal in a close race by 7.32 seconds. The novice four easily handled the Cal novice four, beating them by 43.31 seconds as they finished in 6:41.6.
The Beavers will have two weeks until they head to Sacramento, Calif., for the Pac-10 Championships on May 14.
"We have a couple of good weeks for practice before Pac-10s, but we're looking forward to some rest and some fine-tuning. We're going to have to race well," Owen said.
