Oregon State (16-14 overall, 0-3 Pacific-10) faces another big week on the diamond, finally meeting in-state rival Portland (15-12 overall, 5-6 West Coast) in a non-league game before visiting fourth-ranked Arizona State (28-8, 4-2) for a Pacific-10 series.
The Beavers are looking to bounce back into the win column after being swept at home by UCLA last weekend in OSU's first conference series of the season.
"Hopefully, we learn some things from that," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "That was the first time a lot of our guys had experienced Pac-10 competition, and that may have showed at times. That can't become an excuse, though. There were too many times during the weekend that we just didn't play good, fundamental baseball and it cost us."
The result was a bad-news, good-news scenario for Oregon State.
"What was disappointing was to come out, at home, against one of the most talented teams in the country, and not take advantage of some situations we created," Casey said. "In all three games, there were times when - if we make a play - we can really swing the game in our favor, and we didn't capitalize at those times. That hurt."
The good news?
"We know we're capable of making those plays," Casey said. "We've shown that a number of times this season, that we're perfectly able to do the things we needed to against UCLA, we just didn't do them at some crucial times this weekend. If we play up to the expectations we have for ourselves this season, and play up to the standards we should have set for ourselves in some games already this year, we can compete in this league.
"Our guys shouldn't be sitting around thinking we're completely overmatched now that we're in league games. They should know that they're going against the best and they have to play very good baseball to pick up wins, but they should also know that it's within their capabilities to do that."
Portland is coming off a series at Santa Clara that saw the Pilots win two of three games over the Broncos. Portland won 11-6 on March 31, then split an April 1 doubleheader with a 13-12 loss and a 12-9 win.
"Portland has got things going a little bit," said Casey, who played both baseball and basketball for the Pilots. "They've had some good wins this season, they've been playing pretty well in the league lately, and they're a sound club."
Portland sophomore infielder Cory Lunde is batting .374 with one home run and 16 runs batted in, while senior second baseman Nate Hare is batting .342 with two homers and 13 RBIs and sophomore outfielder Matt Allen his batting .330 with four homers and 23 RBIs.
Arizona State is coming off a series that saw the Sun Devils take two of three from a Stanford team that had been ranked third nationally going into last weekend. ASU dropped the opening game 5-1 before taking wins of 10-6 and 11-6.
"They're one of the best clubs in the country this season," Casey said. "And right now they look like they're playing as well as anybody around. They're getting a great mix of pitching and hitting, they've got a ton of talent - they're going to be tough to beat."
ASU junior catcher/first baseman Casey Myers is batting .428 with 10 homers and 60 RBIs, junior infielder Jeff Phelps is batting .374 with four homers and 34 RBIs, sophomore infielder Brooks Conrad is batting .358 with six homers and 36 RBIs and senior utility player Mitch Jones is batting .353 with 19 homers and 58 RBIs.
On the mound, junior righthander Chad Pennington is 6-0 with a 4.86 earned run average while sophomore lefthander Jon Switzer is 6-1 with a 2.93 ERA and senior lefthander Will Waldrip is 5-1 with a 5.25 ERA.

ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time record of 119-55 against Portland in a series dating back to 1909. The Beavers are on a 10-game winning streak against the Pilots, dating back to a 10-6 loss in the first meeting of the 1997 season at the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho. Last season, OSU won 8-7 in Corvallis, 10-3 in Portland and 17-8 in Portland, another game scheduled for Corvallis was rained out.
Oregon State has an all-time record of 9-15 against Arizona State in a series dating back to 1963. The Beavers are on a 1-game losing streak against the Sun Devils. Last season in Corvallis, ASU won the series opener 9-5, OSU took the second game 9-8, and ASU won the finale 21-9. The teams have not met in Tempe since 1977, when OSU was beaten 11-6 in the Best in the West Tournament.
INJURY REPORT: Freshman infielder Brian Barden (hip flexor) returned to the lineup in the UCLA series. OSU expects all its players to be healthy for this week's games.
RECENT OREGON STATE NOTES: Oregon State has won 15 of its last 24 games. The Beavers have played only 1 non-Division I opponent, beating Western Oregon ... OSU won its 16th game of the season by beating Cal State-Northridge 11-8 on March 26, in 1999, the Beavers didn't record their 16th win until May 7 ... Oregon State has already matched its home win total for all of last season. The Beavers are 6-5 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field in 2000, in 1999, the Beavers had slumped to a 6-9 record in their home ballpark ...
Senior third baseman Tim Dryden currently has a career-best 13-game hitting streak, during the streak, he's batting .474 (18-for-38) with 2 doubles, 1 triple and 10 RBIs ... freshman shortstop Will Hudson and junior second baseman Zach Gordon are both working on career-best 7-game hitting streaks ... Hudson has raised his batting average to .309 for the season, a jump from .200 on March 10. During his 7-game streak, Hudson is batting .533 (8-for-15) with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs ... Gordon's batting average is up to .263 after he was languishing at .111 on March 4. During his 7-game streak, Gordon is batting .375 (9-for-24) with 1 double, 1 homer and 5 RBIs ...
In his last 4 appearances, senior righthander Mark Newell has averaged just under 6.1 innings, 6.8 hits, 3.3 runs (3.0 earned), 2.5 walks and 4.8 strikeouts per start ... in his last 7 appearances, junior lefthander Scott Nicholson has averaged over 6.1 innings, 7.1 hits, 3.3 runs (2.3 earned), 1.3 walks and 5.4 strikeouts per appearance ... in Nicholson's 4 losses this season, OSU has averaged just 2.3 runs per game at the plate, his last 2 losses were 3-0 to Texas A&M and 3-1 to UCLA.
LAST WEEK: Oregon State dropped its first Pacific-10 series of the season, losing to UCLA at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field by scores of 3-1 on March 31, 18-10 on April 1 and 9-5 on April 2. The series attracted nearly 1,000 fans per game.
On March 31, Oregon State's Scott Nicholson lost a pitcher's duel with UCLA's Rob Henkel as the Beavers fell 3-1. OSU couldn't cash in on several scoring opportunities against the Bruin lefthander, who was Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week last week after striking out 18 Washington hitters on March 24. Henkel struck out 11 as he pitched a 7-hitter for UCLA. Nicholson, the Beavers' lefty, allowed 11 hits but just 2 earned runs while striking out 5 in a complete-game performance of his own.
On April 1, Oregon State took a 6-run lead in the early innings, then gave up 17 straight runs and lost to UCLA 18-10. The teams combined for 30 hits and 7 home runs before a season-high crowd of 1,152. Oregon State's Joe Gerber tied the school record for career runs batted in, as he earned his 144th with a second-inning single to drive in Will Hudson.
On April 2, Oregon State gave up 4 runs in the final 3 innings and fell to UCLA 9-5. The Beavers had overcome a 3-run deficit to tie the game before the Bruins completed the sweep. OSU trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning and moved the tying run to third base with 1 out but couldn't score, the Bruins then scored 3 runs in the top of the ninth.
HEAD COACH PAT CASEY: Pat Casey is in his sixth season as Oregon State's head baseball coach. Casey currently has a record of 165-115-4 with the Beavers for a winning percentage of .588. His career record is 336-228-5, which includes 7 years at George Fox University in Newberg, for a winning percentage of .595.
Casey is the fourth OSU baseball head coach to reach 100 victories at the school, following Ralph Coleman (561), Gene Tanselli (115) and Jack Riley (613). Casey picked up his 100th OSU victory on Feb. 21, 1998 at San Diego.
Casey came to OSU from his alma mater, George Fox, after leading the Bruins to a 171-113-1 record and winning 3 NAIA District 2 titles at the school in Newberg, Ore.
ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE JOE GERBER: Oregon State first baseman Joe Gerber (Portland, Ore./Grant HS) is coming off one of the finest offensive seasons in school history, and the senior has already begun collecting honors for 2000. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Gerber to its preseason All-America second team.
This season, Gerber is batting .362 with 15 doubles, 3 home runs and 42 runs batted in. Gerber's hefty RBI total this spring has been the product of uncanny clutch hitting - he is batting .492 with runners on base and .535 with runners in scoring position in 2000.
Gerber has tied OSU's records for career home runs (28) and RBIs (144). He has already set the OSU record for career doubles this season and now has 40.
Gerber's 42 RBIs this season put him over two-thirds of the way to OSU's single-season record with almost half this season's schedule remaining to be played. Gerber's 15 doubles this season tie him for ninth place on OSU's single-season list, only 4 away from tying the school record for a season.
From Feb. 24 to March 18, Gerber had a 12-game hitting streak in which he batted .473 (26-for-55) with 9 doubles, 1 homer and 24 RBIs. Gerber also had an errorless streak of 67 games that stretched over the final 42 games of 1999 and the first 25 games of 2000.
Gerber has also pitched once this season, throwing a 7-inning complete-game win over Central Michigan on March 20.
STARK'S SUDDEN POWER: Junior outfielder Eric Stark went the first 104 games of his Oregon State career without hitting a home run, then homered on back-to-back days. On March 25, he hit a 3-run shot to left-centerfield as OSU dropped the first game of a doubleheader to visiting Cal State-Northridge. On March 26, he hit a 2-run homer to give OSU the lead for good in the series finale against the Matadors.
PRODUCTIVE SWAP FOR ATWOOD, COPELAND: When Oregon State played in the Continental Express Classic at Texas A&M on March 18-20, the Beavers were without freshman infielders Will Hudson and Brian Barden due to injuries. Freshman Stephen Copeland stepped in at second base and had a productive tournament, but OSU needed Copeland to pitch the tourney's final game against the Aggies.
That meant the Beavers had to turn to senior pitcher James Atwood to fill in at second base, Atwood had also played some infield last season at NAIA Albertson College. Copeland wound up pitching a 7-hitter and not allowing an earned run as OSU took a 6-1 win, Atwood went 2-for-3, scored 3 runs and cut off a Texas A&M rally by gunning down an Aggie at the plate with a relay throw.
OREGON STATE'S 12-GAME OFFENSIVE SURGE: Oregon State rediscovered the joy of hitting on Feb. 24, as the Beavers began a 12-game run of outstanding offensive production that lasted until March 18. While posting a 10-2 record to get back over the .500 mark, OSU batted .382 as a team and averaged 11.25 runs per game. During that span, Oregon State hit .419 with runners on base and .458 with runners in scoring position as a team. OSU had at least 10 hits in every one of the 12 games, and the Beavers' 27-4 win at Washington on March 5 was the fourth-largest margin of victory in Beaver baseball history.
ALL-TIME RECORD: Oregon State's all-time record in varsity baseball is now 1,648-1,128-15, a winning percentage of .593. The Beavers' all-time win total ranked 40th among all NCAA Division I schools entering the 2000 season.
OSU's all-time record in conference games is now 740-521, a winning percentage of .587.
To break the numbers down one step further, since starting varsity baseball in 1907, the Beavers have scored 18,245 runs and allowed 13,871 runs. That's an average score of 6.54-4.97.
In its 90 seasons of varsity baseball, OSU has had 67 winning seasons, the Beavers finished at .500 another 4 seasons. The Beavers have won 20 pennants through the years. Oregon State began fielding a varsity baseball team in 1907 and has failed to field a team only 3 times since then - in 1917 due to World War I and in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.
GOSS STADIUM AT COLEMAN FIELD: Oregon State has been playing on the same site since starting varsity baseball in 1907, making Goss Stadium at Coleman Field the oldest diamond in the Pacific-10 and one of the oldest in the country.
In 90-plus seasons at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, the Beavers are 858-366-1 all-time at home for a winning percentage of .701. Oregon State is 6-5 at home this season. Since the start of the 1993 season, OSU is 107-37 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field for a winning percentage of .743.
Goss Stadium was added to Coleman Field over the winter of 1998-99. The ballpark holds 2,000 fans, with the main grandstand seating 1,500 of those. The structure includes a press box, concession/lobby area, dugouts, locker rooms, restrooms and storage areas.
The playing surface has been completely rebuilt recently, with the infield undergoing renovation in 1996 and the outfield in 1998.
OSU HOSTS A SOUTHERN FOE: Cal State-Northridge's visit to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on March 24-26 is believed to be the first time Oregon State hosted a non-Pacific-10 school from a southern region. The only possible exceptions - and this is really stretching it - were home games in 1924 and 1929 against Meiji University of Japan, which is located at roughly the same latitude as California. For the record, Oregon State beat Meiji 7-0 in 1924 and lost 13-6 in 1929, this season, OSU took 3 of 4 games against Cal State-Northridge.
BEAVER ATTENDANCE: Through 10 home dates, Oregon State is averaging 627 fans per date, including a season-high gathering of 1,152 on April 1 vs. UCLA
In the past 2-plus seasons, OSU has drawn 10 home crowds of 1,000 or more after having just 5 crowds of 1,000 or more in the first 8 seasons of the 1990s.
BEAVERS FACE TOP-FLIGHT SCHEDULE: Again this spring, Oregon State will play one of the nation's most challenging schedules. The Beavers have 12 games scheduled against teams in the April 3 USA Today coaches poll - No. 4 Arizona State, No. 6 Stanford, No. 15 Southern California and No. 17 Fresno State. OSU has 7 more games against teams that received votes in the poll but did not make the top 25 - Nevada, UCLA and Texas A&M.

TELEVISION BRINGS OUT BEST IN BEAVERS: Oregon State has been slated for a national cable television game in 2000, that coming when the Beavers play host to Stanford on May 6 in a game that will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
Oregon State has played on national cable television twice in the last 2 seasons, and the Beavers are 2-0 in those games. In 1999, OSU dedicated Goss Stadium at Coleman Field by beating California 11-5. In 1998, the Beavers beat Arizona 3-2 in a game marking the first visit to Corvallis by a Southern Division team in 27 years.
Oregon State wrapped up the 1990s with a 25-13 record in televised games, including 7-1 in national TV games.
OREGON STATE RADIO BROADCASTS: Oregon State baseball will again be broadcast this spring on KLOO-AM (1340) in Corvallis, with almost the entire Beaver schedule on the air. Some games may be pre-empted due to programming conflicts. Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers, will handle the play-by-play duties along with John Warren and Kip Carlson.
Oregon State's broadcasts will also be available over the internet at www.broadcast.com after KLOO installs the necessary equipment in its new studio. No expected date has been given for the installation of the equipment.
OREGON STATE DUGOUT CLUB: The Oregon State Dugout Club is an organization devoted to the support of Beaver baseball. The group is open to the general public, dues are $75 per year.
Also, anyone entering the OSU Dugout Club Golf Tournament automatically gains club membership. This year's tournament will be held June 12 at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River.
Over the past several seasons, projects financed by the OSU Dugout Club include batting cages at Coleman Field, helping finance trips that upgrade the quality of the Beavers' non-league schedule, and carpeting the baseball locker room in Gill Coliseum.
For more information on the OSU Dugout Club, call the OSU baseball office at (541) 737-5738.
