Women's Golf Ninth after first day of Pacific-10 Conference Championships
April 24, 2000
Eugene, Ore. - True-freshman Stacie Ferguson shot an opening round 5-over-par 77 to help the Oregon State University women's golf team into ninth place at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships. The three-day 54-hole tournament is being held at the Eugene Country Club.
Ferguson shot 38 on the front nine, followed by 39 on the back. The Tucson Ariz., native's best finish for the season to date is tied for 36th.
As a team, the Beavers shot 314 and are just six shots back of sixth-place Oregon. The rest of the individual scores for Oregon State include Carina Olsson tied for 31st at 78, Rachel Borcherts is tied for 38th at 79, Anne Brooksby is tied for 40th at 80, and Brie Del Bone is tied for 56th at 84. Brooksby has the shot of the tournament so far, with a hole-in-one on the par 3, 168-yard 12th.
"We gave a lot shots away on the greens today," OSU head coach Rise' Lakowske said. "These greens are deceiving, and if you're not paying close attention, they will bite you."
The No. 3 Southern California Trojans have the team lead after a 292, seven shots better than No. 1 Arizona. No. 22 California and No. 14 UCLA are tied for third at 301.
`We have a real nice opportunity to improve our position in the second round," Lakowske said. "The keys are keeping the ball in the fairway and recognizing putts."
The Bruins Amanda Moltke-Leth shot a 2-under 70 to claim the first round lead. Candie Kung of Southern California, Jill Gomric of Arizona, and Anika Heuser of Oregon each shot 71.
The second round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
