Crews Wrap Up Successful Weekend In San Diego
April 2, 2000
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The 17th-ranked Oregon State women's crew and the No. 15 men's crew capped off two days of racing on Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic. The women's varsity eight won the petite final and the men's first varsity eight took second place in the Copely Cup petite final at the San Diego Crew Classic.
The women's first varsity eight rowed the 2000-meter course on Mission Bay in 6:52.3 to capture the petite final win, which placed them seventh overall. The petite final determines places seven through twelve, while places one through six are determined in the grand final. OSU outrowed second-place Washington State by over three seconds to claim the victory.
In men's racing, OSU's first varsity eight crossed the finish line just two seconds behind top-10 team Yale to take second in the petite final with a time of 6:08.
"To be within two seconds of Yale, or a crew of that caliber, is a good start to the season," OSU men's coach Dave Reischman said. "I thought Saturday we didn't race really well in the heats. We had better races on Sunday even though the conditions were a little worse in terms of wind. I'm pretty happy with the progress of the crew in general, but we still need to get faster."
The women's second varsity eight was the only OSU crew to race in a grand final this weekend, they took fourth in 6:56.6. They were the second fastest Pac-10 crew in the race, which is the best they have done since women's crew became a NCAA sport in 1996.
The petite final win for the women's first varsity eight was made sweeter by the fact that they edged out Washington State, who defeated the Beavers on the Snake River last weekend.
"I feel very good about how we finished the regatta today," OSU women's coach Charlie Owen said. "The first varsity showed some improvement during the first half of the race and used it to help earn their first win of the season. It felt particularly good since we lost to Washington State a week ago. We also beat Michigan State, who was ranked higher in the preseason coaches poll."
"The race conditions for both varsity races were somewhat challenging because of a fairly strong tail wind, but our crews handled it very well," Owen said.
In the men's JV petite final, OSU missed out on the win by one-half second to Orange Coast University, while the men's novice `A' team raced to a time of 6:10.2 to take third in their race.
The women's novice eight captured the win in their petite final, blowing away the rest of the field by finishing in 7:09.6. Texas was the closest boat, crossing the line nearly 21 seconds after Oregon State.
Next week the men's crew will head east to take on Wisconsin, while the women will be in Redwood Shores, Calif. to race a tough Cal team.
