April 13, 2000
Moraga, Cal. -
Tarrah Beyster pitched a two-hit shutout and Steph Adams was perfect at the plate as the No. 12 Oregon State University softball team (29-12-1) wrapped up a double-header sweep over the St. Mary's Gaels (17-22) with a 10-0 five-inning victory in game two. The Beavers won the opener 5-2.
Beyster allowed just two first inning hits as she upped her record to 18-8 for the season. The senior also struck out six.
"Tarrah did a terrific job pitching in game two," Beaver Head Coach Kirk Walker said. "She was completely overpowering after allowing the two hits."
Freshman outfielder Steph Adams went 3-for-3 in game two with three RBI. The North Medford High School graduate also accounted for three RBI, one in the first inning, and two in the four-run fourth with a two-run single. The Beavers cracked 13 hits in the nightcap.
First baseman Jenni Jodoin provided the offensive punch in game one with a 3-for-3, one RBI contest. Second baseman Brynnen Guthrie also added two hits and two runs.
The Beavers broke a 1-1 tie with a game clinching four-run fifth inning. Oregon State benefited from two costly Gael errors, in addition to RBI singles by Beyster and centerfielder Michelle Chariton.
Game one also featured an outstanding pitching performance by Crystal Draper. The sophomore allowed two earned runs, and struck out seven to improve to 11-4 for the season.
"We had a very good day offensively," Walker said. "We took advantage of our scoring opportunities, which we haven't been doing consistently of late."
Adams and Jodoin finished the doubleheader with four hits, and shortstop Shawna Feldt and Guthrie each added three hits.
Oregon State returns to action Friday at the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal, before finishing the week with single games at No. 7 California Saturday and Sunday.
