Reser's Fine Foods Scouts Weekend: All Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Campfire Girls, Brownies and members of other scout groups will be admitted free to any game of OSU's series against Arizona when they wear an identifying part of their uniform. Also, samples of Resers Fine Foods and discount coupons will be given away to all fans entering the ballpark.
Oregon State (17-17 overall, 1-5 Pacific-10) will be trying to build some momentum as the Beavers play a non-league game at Portland (16-14, 6-8 West Coast) and greet Arizona (20-21, 5-7) for a Pacific-10 series at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The Beavers are fresh off one of their best efforts of the season thus far. OSU earned one win in a three-game series at fourth-ranked Arizona State last weekend, and both losses were by a single run.
"You can't be satisfied losing a series," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "It was disappointing last weekend because we had some tremendous opportunities to win those other two games against one of the best teams in the country in its own yard. Chances like that don't come along every week.
"But what we did at Arizona State should let us know what we're capable of - we were that close to taking a series from one of the five best teams in the country. If our young guys had any questions about what it takes for them to compete in this league, those should be answered now."
The Beavers used strong pitching and tight defense to battle ASU after those areas had been Oregon State's downfall in a sweep by UCLA and a loss to Portland in the preceeding week.
"Those two areas right there are what win baseball games, and we played the way you have to in both of them," Casey said. "Our effort has been consistently good, but this time we had the execution to go with it. We've still got some areas of our game to clean up. There are times we have to put the ball in play and execute at the plate where we haven't been successful lately, and there are times we need to find a way to get a key out. If we make some strides there, we could have some real success this season."
But, Casey warned, OSU has to play with the effort and sharpness it showed at Arizona State for that to happen.
"We can't all of a sudden think we've arrived as a club," Casey said. "If we go out and play hard and battle, we can be pretty good. If we don't do that, we're going to have a real tough time of it.
"Hopefully, we got a little taste of what the rest of the year could be like. Now we've got to take care of the little things that move you from being one run behind to being one run ahead at the end of games against good clubs."
The Beavers are also looking forward to playing in front of the home fans again. OSU averaged nearly 1,000 fans per game for its conference-opening series against UCLA.
"We had some great crowds come out that weekend," Casey said. "It got loud, and our players noticed it. Unfortunately, we didn't play our best baseball of the season for them, we're going to do everything we can to change that this weekend."
Portland went 2-2 last week, beating OSU 13-10 in Corvallis and dropping two of three to San Francisco at home. USF won 7-3 and 4-3 before the Pilots took the finale 10-6.

LAST WEEK: Oregon State dropped a non-league home game to Portland 13-10 on April 4, then took 1 of 3 games in a Pacific-10 series at fourth-ranked Arizona State with ASU winning 1-0, OSU winning 11-3 and the Sun Devils taking the finale 8-7. Pitching and defense boosted the Beavers against an Arizona State team that went into the week ranked first nationally in scoring (11.25 runs per game) and second in team batting average (.346).
On April 4, the Beavers gave up 10 runs in the final 3 innings against Portland, losing 13-10 to end a 10-game OSU winning streak in the series against the Pilots. Joe Gerber set Oregon State's record for career runs batted in when he drove in his 145th with an eighth-inning groundout. Portland took the lead for good at 12-8 on Matt Allen's grand slam in the top of the eighth inning. OSU turned its first triple play since 1998 in the fourth inning, with Gerber snaring a low line drive at first base, then touching the bag for the second out and firing the ball to shortstop Will Hudson covering second base for the third out.
On April 7, OSU's Thad Johnson pitched a 3-hitter against one of the nation's top offensive teams but the Beavers fell 1-0 at Arizona State. Johnson allowed a second-inning run on a double by Brooks Conrad, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Mike Lopez, he wound up walking 2 and striking out 1. OSU turned 4 double plays behind Johnson, but the Beavers left 11 men on base, including 6 in scoring position against ASU pitchers Jon Switzer and Eric Doble.
On April 8, Scott Nicholson pitched a gem of his own for the Beavers in an 11-3 victory at Arizona State. Nicholson tossed a 7-hitter, walking 1 and striking out 6 as he allowed just 1 earned run. OSU used a 5-run third inning - including a 2-run double by Andy Jarvis - to build a 7-0 lead against ASU's Chad Pennington, who lost for the first time this season after winning 6 straight. OSU hadn't beaten a team with a ranking higher than Arizona State's No. 4 since winning at third-ranked Southern California in 1998, and the win was Oregon State's first over ASU in Tempe since 1967.
On April 9, OSU battled back several times before finally falling 8-7 at Arizona State. The Beavers trailed 5-2 after 3 innings and 8-4 after 6 innings, but rallied with a run in the eighth inning and then Jarvis' 2-run homer in the ninth before Doble closed out the game. OSU's bullpen helped keep the Beavers in the game as Stephen Copeland, James Atwood, Craig Hays and Don Stykel combined to limit the Sun Devils to just 3 runs over the final 7 innings.
HEAD COACH PAT CASEY: Pat Casey is in his sixth season as Oregon State's head baseball coach. Casey currently has a record of 166-118-4 with the Beavers for a winning percentage of .583. His career record is 337-231-5, which includes 7 years at George Fox University in Newberg, for a winning percentage of .592.
Casey is the fourth OSU baseball head coach to reach 100 victories at the school, following Ralph Coleman (561), Gene Tanselli (115) and Jack Riley (613). Casey picked up his 100th OSU victory on Feb. 21, 1998 at San Diego.
Casey came to OSU from his alma mater, George Fox, after leading the Bruins to a 171-113-1 record and winning 3 NAIA District 2 titles at the school in Newberg, Ore.
ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE JOE GERBER: Oregon State first baseman Joe Gerber (Portland, Ore./Grant HS) is coming off one of the finest offensive seasons in school history, and the senior has already begun collecting honors for 2000. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Gerber to its preseason All-America second team.
This season, Gerber is batting .362 with 15 doubles, 3 home runs and 45 runs batted in. Gerber's hefty RBI total this spring has been the product of uncanny clutch hitting - he is batting .486 with runners on base and .510 with runners in scoring position in 2000.
In the Pacific-10 entering this week, Gerber is tied for second in doubles (15), tied for third in RBIs (45), and sixth in on-base percentage (.465).
Gerber has tied OSU's record for career home runs (28). He has already set the OSU records for career RBIs (now with 147) and career doubles (now with 40).
Gerber's 45 RBIs this season put him over two-thirds of the way to OSU's single-season record with over one-third of this season's schedule remaining to be played. Gerber's 15 doubles this season tie him for ninth place on OSU's single-season list, only 4 away from tying the school record for a season.
From Feb. 24 to March 18, Gerber had a 12-game hitting streak in which he batted .473 (26-for-55) with 9 doubles, 1 homer and 24 RBIs. Gerber also had an errorless streak of 67 games that stretched over the final 42 games of 1999 and the first 25 games of 2000.
Gerber has also pitched once this season, throwing a 7-inning complete-game win over Central Michigan on March 20.
JOHNSON AND NICHOLSON TAME SEARING SUN DEVILS: April 7-8 at fourth-ranked Arizona State, junior pitchers Thad Johnson and Scott Nicholson turned in one of OSU's top back-to-back pitching efforts in recent memory. ASU entered the games ranked first nationally in scoring (11.25 runs per game) and second in team batting average (.346), Johnson and Nicholson limited the Sun Devils to just 4 runs (2 earned) on 10 hits in a pair of complete games. For the entire series, ASU averaged just 4 runs per game and batted .233 as a team.
Johnson took a 1-0 loss despite pitching a 3-hitter, walking 2 and striking out 1 but getting groundball after groundball off the ASU bats. The Beavers turned 4 double plays behind Johnson, but also left 11 runners on base with 6 of those in scoring position.
Nicholson then tossed a 7-hitter and the Beaver bats helped him to an 11-3 victory. The lefty walked just 1 and struck out 6, and only 1 of the Sun Devil runs was earned.
BEAVERS BEAT HIGHEST-RANKED TEAM SINCE ... : When Oregon State beat fourth-ranked Arizona State 11-3 in Tempe on April 8, it was the highest-ranked team OSU had beaten since winning at third-ranked Southern California 13-6 on March 8, 1998.
BEAVERS TURN TRIPLE PLAY: Oregon State turned its first triple play in almost 2 years during a 13-10 non-league loss to Portland on April 4 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The triple play came after Nate Hare reached on an error to start the fourth inning and Travis Hanson followed with a single. Tim Friedman hit a sinking line drive to first base and first baseman Joe Gerber plucked it out of the air for the first out, he then stepped on first to retire Hanson and zipped the ball to shortstop Will Hudson covering second base to nip Hare as he headed back to the bag.
The triple play was Oregon State's first since May 9, 1998 against UCLA at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
STARK'S SUDDEN POWER: Junior outfielder Eric Stark went the first 104 games of his Oregon State career without hitting a home run, then homered on back-to-back days. On March 25, he hit a 3-run shot to left-centerfield as OSU dropped the first game of a doubleheader to visiting Cal State-Northridge. On March 26, he hit a 2-run homer to give OSU the lead for good in the series finale against the Matadors.
OSU HOSTS A SOUTHERN FOE: Cal State-Northridge's visit to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on March 24-26 is believed to be the first time Oregon State hosted a non-Pacific-10 school from a southern region. The only possible exceptions - and this is really stretching it - were home games in 1924 and 1929 against Meiji University of Japan, which is located at roughly the same latitude as California. For the record, Oregon State beat Meiji 7-0 in 1924 and lost 13-6 in 1929, this season, OSU took 3 of 4 games against Cal State-Northridge.
PRODUCTIVE SWAP FOR ATWOOD, COPELAND: When Oregon State played in the Continental Express Classic at Texas A&M on March 18-20, the Beavers were without freshman infielders Will Hudson and Brian Barden due to injuries. Freshman Stephen Copeland stepped in at second base and had a productive tournament, but OSU needed Copeland to pitch the tourney's final game against the Aggies.
That meant the Beavers had to turn to senior pitcher James Atwood to fill in at second base, Atwood had also played some infield last season at NAIA Albertson College. Copeland wound up pitching a 7-hitter and not allowing an earned run as OSU took a 6-1 win, Atwood went 2-for-3, scored 3 runs and cut off a Texas A&M rally by gunning down an Aggie at the plate with a relay throw.
OREGON STATE'S 12-GAME OFFENSIVE SURGE: Oregon State rediscovered the joy of hitting on Feb. 24, as the Beavers began a 12-game run of outstanding offensive production that lasted until March 18. While posting a 10-2 record to get back over the .500 mark, OSU batted .382 as a team and averaged 11.25 runs per game. During that span, Oregon State hit .419 with runners on base and .458 with runners in scoring position as a team. OSU had at least 10 hits in every one of the 12 games, and the Beavers' 27-4 win at Washington on March 5 was the fourth-largest margin of victory in Beaver baseball history.
ALL-TIME RECORD: Oregon State's all-time record in varsity baseball is now 1,649-1,131-15, a winning percentage of .593. The Beavers' all-time win total ranked 40th among all NCAA Division I schools entering the 2000 season.
OSU's all-time record in conference games is now 741-523, a winning percentage of .586.
To break the numbers down one step further, since starting varsity baseball in 1907, the Beavers have scored 18,273 runs and allowed 13,896 runs. That's an average score of 6.54-4.97.
In its 90 seasons of varsity baseball, OSU has had 67 winning seasons, the Beavers finished at .500 another 4 seasons. The Beavers have won 20 pennants through the years. Oregon State began fielding a varsity baseball team in 1907 and has failed to field a team only 3 times since then - in 1917 due to World War I and in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.
GOSS STADIUM AT COLEMAN FIELD: Oregon State has been playing on the same site since starting varsity baseball in 1907, making Goss Stadium at Coleman Field the oldest diamond in the Pacific-10 and one of the oldest in the country.
In 90-plus seasons at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, the Beavers are 858-367-1 all-time at home for a winning percentage of .701. Oregon State is 6-6 at home this season. Since the start of the 1993 season, OSU is 107-38 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field for a winning percentage of .738.
Goss Stadium was added to Coleman Field over the winter of 1998-99. The ballpark holds 2,000 fans, with the main grandstand seating 1,500 of those. The structure includes a press box, concession/lobby area, dugouts, locker rooms, restrooms and storage areas.
The playing surface has been completely rebuilt recently, with the infield undergoing renovation in 1996 and the outfield in 1998.
BEAVER ATTENDANCE: Through 11 home dates, Oregon State is averaging 596 fans per date, including a season-high gathering of 1,152 on April 1 vs. UCLA.
In the past 2-plus seasons, OSU has drawn 10 home crowds of 1,000 or more after having just 5 crowds of 1,000 or more in the first 8 seasons of the 1990s.
BEAVERS FACE TOP-FLIGHT SCHEDULE: Again this spring, Oregon State will play one of the nation's most challenging schedules. The Beavers have 15 games scheduled against teams in the April 10 USA Today coaches poll - No. 4 Arizona State, No. 5 Stanford, No. 18 Southern California, No. 19 Fresno State and No. 24 UCLA. OSU's schedule has 1 more game against a team that received votes in the poll but did not make the top 25 - Nevada.

TELEVISION BRINGS OUT BEST IN BEAVERS: Oregon State has been slated for a national cable television game in 2000, that coming when the Beavers play host to Stanford on May 6 in a game that will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
Oregon State has played on national cable television twice in the last 2 seasons, and the Beavers are 2-0 in those games. In 1999, OSU dedicated Goss Stadium at Coleman Field by beating California 11-5. In 1998, the Beavers beat Arizona 3-2 in a game marking the first visit to Corvallis by a Southern Division team in 27 years.
Oregon State wrapped up the 1990s with a 25-13 record in televised games, including 7-1 in national TV games.
OREGON STATE RADIO BROADCASTS: Oregon State baseball will again be broadcast this spring on KLOO-AM (1340) in Corvallis, with almost the entire Beaver schedule on the air. Some games may be pre-empted due to programming conflicts. Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers, will handle the play-by-play duties along with John Warren and Kip Carlson.
Oregon State's broadcasts will also be available over the internet at www.broadcast.com after KLOO installs the necessary equipment in its new studio. No expected date has been given for the installation of the equipment.
