Men's Orange (No. 2) Team Takes Pilot Spring Invitational
March 8, 2000
PORTLAND, Ore. - - Kyle Hudson shot a final round 66 to capture the Pilot Spring Invitational title at 6-under and help the Oregon State men's number-two golf team win the team title on Tuesday.
OSU's score of 717 gave the Beavers a five-stroke margin of victory over the University of Portland, whom the Beavers trailed by two strokes after the first round on Monday.
Oregon State assistant coach Brian Watts was proud of the fact that OSU did so well, given the fact that the Beavers only took four people to the tournament, while other teams took five. Teams counted the lowest four scores of the five players each day, so the Beavers had little leeway without being able to drop a high score.
"They did a great job," said Watts. "They represented Oregon State really well. I'm proud of them."
The win was the first of Hudson's career. Hudson, who finished fourth at the Pilot Invitational his freshman season, won by three strokes over Brian Hughes of Portland State and Idaho's Ryan Benzel. Hudson's career-low round of 66 included 8 birdies and only one double bogey, and earned him the title with a 45-hole total of 173.
Eric Dahm and Todd Deacon finished tied for seventh after shooting 179. Deacon's only previous action this year was at the Northwest Classic in the fall, where he finished 62nd. Deacon easily shattered his previous season low with a 72 in the first round.
Chance Holmes placed 20th in what was only his third tournament of the year. He shot a 71 in the final round en route to 186 for the tournament. Holmes' finish was the best of the season so far for the freshman.
OSU's next action will be at the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Mar. 20-21.
