OSU announces men's soccer signings
March 8, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State signed seven men's soccer players during the recent letter of intent singning period, OSU head coach Dana Taylor announced Wednesday.
Joining the Beavers are goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer (Omaha, Neb./Westside HS), back Josh Boys (Los Angeles, Calif./Ventura HS), back Ross Duncan (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley HS), forward George Egwanuew (Surulere Lagos, Nigera/West African Senior School), goalkeeper Mark Muleady (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield HS), forward Jesse Servin (Reseda, Calif./Reseda HS), and midfielder/back Christian Van Blomstein (Tacoma, Wash./Washington HS). Duncan is currently enrolled at Oregon State, Egwanuew will be at OSU in the spring, and the other four players will join the Beavers for fall drills.
"Last year's recruiting class enabled us to establish a base for years to come," Taylor said. "This year our recruiting was more specific in nature, allowing us to go after specific needs on the field. We're very confident that we've filled those needs.
"Once again, we'll be a very young team that will lead to an exciting season, especially now that we're in the Pacific-10."
Billmeyer played for the Arhego club and was a Region II regional team goalkeeper.
"Peter is a big, strong, athletic goalkeeper who has strong communication skills and commands his box well," Taylor said. "He's fearless of opposing players. He is also a leader who will step in and raise the intensity of our club."
Boys was on the Cal South state team and part of the Region IV regional pool. He played for South Cal United.
"Josh is a ball-winner," Taylor said. "He is very good in the air and very strong. His athleticism will allow us to play him anywhere in the defense."
Duncan played for the McKenzie United club.
"Ross is composed on the ball and technically proficient," Taylor said. "He's very athletic and has very good pace."
Muleady participated in United States Soccer's U-18 national camp last November, an event held for the top 40 players in the country. Muleady is considered one of the top 10 prep goalkeepers in the country this year.
"With his size (6-foot-3, 180 pounds) and experience, Mark will certainly help us next fall," Taylor said of Muleady.
Servin was part of the U-17 national pool from Region IV. He played club soccer for the Cal Heat.
"With an attacking mentality, Jesse uses a high level of creativity - accompanied by great athleticism - to score goals," Taylor said.
Van Blomstein was part of the Washington State Olympic Development Team, and his F.C. United club won the U-18 national tournament.
"Christian is an athletic midfielder who reads the game very well," Taylor said. "He has good use of the ball, accompanied by an aerial presence that will help our team on both offensive and defensive set pieces."
Egwanuew was part of Nigeria's U-17 National Pool.
