Oregon State Adds Talented Nevada Transfer To Women's Golf Team
March 7, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Brie Del Bone will be teeing it up for the women's golf team this spring after transferring from the University of Nevada to play for coach Rise Lakowske.
"We're really glad to have her," said Lakowske. "She adds a lot of depth and is a proven player. She's going to help us out a lot."
In her first tournament at Oregon State, Del Bone shot a three-round total of 226 at the Arizona Invitational in February, with a final round of 2-under 70. After three rounds this season, Del Bone leads the team with a 75.3 stroke average.
Lakowske feels Del Bone's short-game will help the Beavers immediately. "She has a strong short-game, and is a very, very good putter. She's going to learn a lot about course management in the next two years."
Del Bone, a sophomore, is a graduate of Sheldon High School in Eugene, where she lettered four years as the number-one golfer for coach Tony Joyner. As the team captain for four years, Del Bone earned all-league honors and was district medalist every season in high school. She also played her way to all-state honors twice.
Del Bone was the number-two golfer at Nevada for coach Carl Laib during her 1 ˝ year stay, lettering as a true freshman. Del Bone also earned All Big West Second Team honors as a freshman.
Del Bone's clutch play should help the Beavers right away. While in high school, Del Bone claimed the 1997 Oregon State Junior title with a birdie on the final hole. She also took the 1999 Oregon Women's Amateur Stroke Play Championship in a sudden-death playoff.
Del Bone cited several factors in her decision to come to OSU, two of which were the Beaver coaches and players. She noted that the quality of tournaments in which OSU competes and the chance to play at a Pacific-10 school were reasons to transfer to Oregon State as well.
Oregon State does not play again until they travel to Hawaii for the Dr. Thompson's Invitational Mar. 29-31.
