COMMENTS FROM COACH JUDY SPOELSTRA
ON OREGON: "We are exciting about getting another opportunity to play Oregon. We felt like we let the game up here slip away a little bit. We feel like we have improved a lot since we played them the last time. We are anxious to have another chance at beating a Pac-10 opponent. We must contain Shaquala Williams as much as possible. They have had a different player step up in recent games. Angelina Wolvert always gives us fits and is a great player. They are like UCLA in that they have so many weapons that you have to really focus on and you can't put your attention on one player."
ON ARIZONA ROAD TRIP: "We put out a great amount of effort in the game with Arizona. We had our opportunities to win that game after leading most of the way, it was definitely ours to win. I thought we outplayed Arizona and if we had gotten a few more free throws, because we were shooting very good, it might have made a difference. It was hard for us to regroup for the Arizona State game. If we would have had some real good productivity from our bench in the ASU game we might have been able to pull that game out."

PIERCE JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB: Sissel Pierce scored 37 points in her two-game trip to Arizona, which was good enough to push her over the 1,000-point mark in her OSU career. Sissel has now scored 1,016 career points and is the 12th Beaver player in history to top the 1,000 mark. She ranks 11th on the OSU career list, passing Robyn Clark (1,009). Sonjhia Fleming holds down the 10th spot on the Beaver career list with 1,060 points.
PIERCE OWNS ALL OSU BLOCKED SHOTS RECORDS: Oregon State senior center Sissel Pierce now owns all of the Beavers' records for blocked shots, plus she is moving up the Pac-10 season and career charts. She holds the OSU career record (172), the single-season record (81), by getting a blocked shot at Washington State (2/19), and the single-game record (8). Pierce had a single-game record eight blocked shots against Arizona State (2/4), topping her old mark of seven, which she had set twice earlier this season against Hawaii (12/11) and Portland (12/29). Sissel currently ranks fourth in career blocked shots in the Pac-10 Conference and seventh in single-season blocked shots. Pierce entered the ASU game (2/4/00) needing three blocked shots to become the Beavers' career shot blocker and she got a single-game record of eight. She is the fifth player in Oregon State history to record 100 or more blocked shots in a career. In her last 21 games, Pierce has blocked 69 shots. Pierce surpassed Carol Menken-Schaudt (1981) for first place in season blocked shots with her 70th vs. WSU. Pierce enters Friday's game at Oregon needing two blocked shots to move into sixth place on the Pac-10 single-season list. OSU's career and season top 10 lists follow:

OSU SETS PAC-10 DEFENSIVE RECORD: Oregon State established a Pac-10 defensive record in its 52-33 victory over California (2/10). By holding the Bears to 33 points, it was the fewest points scored by a Pac-10 team in a conference game. The previous low was 36 points scored by California against Stanford (87) in 1996 and 36 by the Bears against Oregon (75) in 1995. Now the Beavers hold the record for defense in a conference game and for all games. OSU holds the record for fewest points allowed when it limited UC Irvine to only 24 points in a 63-24 victory on December 9, 1989. California scored 15 points in the first half and 18 in the second half. The Beavers' record for fewest points allowed in a half is 13 in the first half and 11 in the second half, both marks were against UC Irvine.
STRONG DEFENSE: Oregon State leads the Pac-10 in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Beavers are allowing only 61.1 points a game and opponents are shooting only .389 vs. OSU. The Beavers are also first in blocked shots at 4.9 a game, third in steals at 9.79 per game and top the conference in rebounding at +5.9 per game. OSU is forcing an average of 19.4 turnovers a game. Reda Petraitis tops OSU in steals with 74, which ranks second in the Pac-10. Eight players have 12 or more steals. The Beavers have held 13 opponents under a .400 shooting mark to date, including eight of the last 14 games, which were all victories for OSU. The Beavers limited California (2/10) to an opponents season-low .226 from the field and Washington shot only .254 at Seattle against the Beavers..
TOWER OF STRENGTH ON THE BOARDS: Oregon State has been a strong rebounding team the entire season and has led the Pac-10 Conference in rebounding, except for one week, the entire season. The Beavers and Arizona have been one-two in rebounding the entire season, and after Wildcats out rebounded OSU 48-38 at Corvallis (2/6), Arizona moved ahead of OSU for one game. The Beavers are back on top with a +5.9, compared to +4.4 by the Wildcats, after a 43-31 Beaver advantage at Tucson (3/4). OSU has held a rebounding edge in 20 of 29 games to date. The Beavers are strong on the offensive boards with 468, compared to 361 by opponents. OSU is second in the Pac-10 in offensive boards with 16.14 average. Reda Petraitis is the Beavers' top rebounder at 7.4 and ranks fourth in the Pac-10. Sissel Pierce ranks sixth in rebounding (6.3) and Felicia Ragland ranks eighth at 6.2
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Oregon State players have notched 12 double-double games this season, the latest by Reda Petraitis vs. Arizona (3/2/00) with 16 points and 11 rebounds. It was Petraitis' second of the season and second of her career. In the previous week, Felicia Ragland against UCLA (2/26). Ragland had 14 points and 10 rebounds. It was Ragland's third this season and fifth career double-double. Sissel Pierce, who leads the Beavers' with six double-doubles this season, had her last double-double game vs. USC (1/29). Pierce recorded her sixth double-double of the season and 12th of her career with a 18-point, 12-rebound performance at USC. Oregon State has had four players produce double-doubles to date this season. Sophomore center Ericka Cook recorded her first career double-double with a 16-point, 10-rebound performance against Idaho State on November 26. Pierce went on a four game double-double streak starting with Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and continuing with Colorado, Colorado State and Portland. In addition to Pierce scoring a double-double in the Wisconsin-Milwaukee game at the Hawaii Invitational Tournament, Reda Petraitis had her first career double-double in the game (12 points, 17 rebounds), and Felicia Ragland produced her third career double-double in the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds. When Pierce, Petraitis and Ragland produced double-doubles vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, it was the first time in OSU history that three Beaver players produced double-doubles in the same game. Pierce opened Pac-10 play with her fifth double-double of the season and 11th career double with 17 points and 10 rebounds vs. Oregon. ON THE CHARTS: Felicia Ragland is currently eighth on OSU's season 3-point shot made top-10 list with 26. She is second on the season 3-point attempt list with 97. Sissel Pierce is 9th in career rebounding with 55241. Her next stop is Tanya Mothershed who is eighth with 577. As she currently stands, Pierce has a .533 career shooting percentage mark which put her third on OSU's all-time list. Pierce has 1,016 career points and is the 12th player in OSU history to reach 1,000 points in a career. Pierce has made 431 career field goals, which ranks 11th on the Beavers' career list. Chassie Wiersma's .828 free throw percentage currently ranks as the third best ever at OSU for a single season.
HOT SHOOTING: Oregon State had its hottest shooting night of the season in downing USC 73-66 on (2/24). Beavers shot .694, just below their school record of .702 (40-57) vs. Washington in 1981, which is also the Pacific-10 Conference record. OSU shot .600 in the first half (12-20) and .813 in the second half (13-16) vs. the Trojans.
BEAVERS TIE SCHOOL RECORD FOR FREE THROW PERCENTAGE: For a team ranked last in the Pac-10 Conference for free throw shooting accuracy, it was probably a surprise for Oregon State to equal its own school record for free throw percentage in a game. The Beavers did just that in their 79-77 overtime loss at Arizona. OSU hit 11 of 12 shots from the line for a .917 percentage, the same mark and numbers registered by the Beavers in a game against Washington on 2/26/87, which was also a 2-point defeat (69-67). OSU's only miss against the Wildcats was by Sissel Pierce who went 1 for 2.
CHASSIE WIERSMA CHASING RECORD: Speaking of free throws, sophomore guard Chassie Wiersma has been red hot at the free throw line and has made her last 17 shots in a row, dating back to Washington (2/17), a stretch of six games. The OSU school record for consecutive free throws made is 19 by Jennifer Busen in 1997. Chassie is shooting .828 from the line this season, which would be the third best ever by a Beaver player in one season. She is shooting .844 in Pac-10 games only, which ranks fourth in the conference.
FREE THROW SHOOTING CONTINUES TO IMPROVE: As a team, Oregon State struggled at the free throw line during the preseason, but has shown constant improvement during Pac-10 play. The Beavers finished preseason play with a .518 percentage from the line, which was dead last in the Pac-10. OSU has improved to .598 overall and is .648 in conference play. Two of the Beavers' frontcourt players have struggled this year at the line, which has hurt OSU a great deal as they both lead the club in attempts. Reda Petraitis has hit only 30 of 80 (.375) and Sissel Pierce is shooting .489, making only 43 of 88 attempts. However, with the game on the line at USC (1/29), Pierce sank two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to protect the OSU victory. Earlier in Pac-10 play, Cherrith Wiersma sank a pair of free throws to give OSU a 1-point lead over California (1/15) and Syesha Thomas canned a pair with :04 seconds left to ensure a 53-50 victory over the Bears. Felicia Ragland canned a pair of free throws with :07 seconds left at WSU to preserve a 65-62 victory on February 19. The Beavers' top free throw shooter does not get many opportunities. Chassie Wiersma is shooting .828, but has only been to the line 64 times, hitting 53. She needs 58 free throws made to qualify among the Pac-10 leaders. Felicia Ragland had made 11 straight free throws before missing against USC (2/24). Ragland has improved her percentage to .747 overall and .779 in conference play. OSU opponents are shooting .708 at the foul line and have made 94 more shots. The Beavers are last in the Pac-10 at .598 free throw percentage, while California is ninth at .655.
THE FIRST TIME AROUND: Oregon scored a 68-51 victory over the Beavers in the first meeting on January 8 at Corvallis. Shaquala Williams scored 25 points to lead the Ducks, while Brianne Meharry and Nicole Strange added 12 apiece. Felicia Ragland and Sissel Pierce paced OSU with 17 points apiece. Pierce had a double-double with 10 rebounds. The Beavers held a 43-31 rebounding edge, but Oregon shot much better from the field .456 to .362. The Ducks committed only 13 turnovers, compared to 21 by OSU.
NOTES: Oregon State's sweep of Washington and Washington State, both home and away, this season amounts to the first such sweep since 1983...during the 1983 season, the Beavers won all four meetings with the Huskies and both games against the Cougars...Oregon State has also recorded series sweeps over California and USC this year...OSU has made 66 more field goals than its opponents, but has made 94 less free throws...the Beavers lead the Pac-10 in blocked shots with 4.90 per game, with Sissel Pierce ranked second in the nation with 2.89 average...Felicia Ragland is eighth in the Pac-10 in scoring (13.0), fifth in steals (2.10) and eighth in rebounding (6.20)...Reda Petraitis is fourth in rebounding (7.4) and second in steals with 2.55 per game...Sissel Pierce ranks sixth in rebounding (6.3), ranks seventh in scoring (13.1), leads the conference in blocked shots, averaging 2.89 per game and is sixth in field goal shooting percentage at .533...OSU is last in scoring offense, averaging 61.3 per game, but leads in scoring defense, yielding 61.1 points per game, in field goal pct. defense at .389 and in rebounding at +5.9.
SENIORS GO OUT WITH BANG: Oregon State's two graduating seniors, Sissel Pierce and Reda Petraitis, played in their final game in a Beaver uniform at Gill Coliseum against UCLA last Saturday night. They led OSU to a 72-52 upset victory over the No. 22 ranked Bruins. Pierce had 21 points, hitting 10 of 16 from the field, and had 4 blocked shots. Petraitis had 7 points , 3 rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. Their contribution defensively was just as big. The vaunted UCLA front-line accounted for only 20 points, 8 by Maylana Martin, 8 by Janae Hubbard and 4 by Maria Philman. Martin had 39 points in her previous outing at Oregon.
PIERCE EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR: Senior center Sissel Pierce earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors (2/28) after helping OSU to victories over USC and UCLA. Pierce averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots and 1.5 assists per game, and shot 68 percent from the field (17 for 25) and .714 from the line (5 for 7).
