Women's Golf Ties For Ninth At Rainbow Tournament
March 30, 2000
HONOLULU, Haw. - - Oregon State finished the Dr. Thompson's Rainbow tournament tied for ninth place with Colorado and Texas-El Paso in women's golf Thursday at the par-72 Olomana Golf Links.
The Beavers shot a 321 in the final round to give them a total of 964 for the tournament.
Carina Olsson lead OSU's attack with a 77 in the final round to finish tied for 26th at 19-over 235. The finish was Olsson's second best of the season, and she tied her season-best three round total with the 235.
The Beavers now have three top-10 finishes this year, but head coach Rise Lakowske felt OSU should have done better at this tournament.
"This isn't a difficult course," Lakowske said. "The wind wasn't blowing ... there are no excuses. Our short game was disappointing. Normally it's very good, we work on it a lot. We should have made adjustments, but we're going to work on it."
"A lot of it was mental mistakes," Lakowske said. "They're much more talented than what they showed."
Anne Brooksby shot 242 to finish tied for 40th, which was her third-best finish of the year. Rachel Borcherts was one shot back at 27-over. Bridget Bieth and Reena Eklund were 36 and 39-over, respectively.
Arizona, Pepperdine, and Southern California made it a three-team race for the title, with Arizona finally securing a two-stroke victory by shooting 883. The Wildcats used a final round 289 to shoot up from third place and overtake Pepperdine and USC, who finished second and third, respectively. A total of 25 shots separated third-place USC from Oklahoma State, who finished fourth.
Arizona's Cristina Baena earned the individual title in a sudden-death playoff against teammate Jenna Daniels. Both had identical 75-69-69 scores over the three days for a total of 3-under 213. Baena won on the second hole of the playoff.
Oregon State's next action will be at the Arizona State/Ping Invitational on Apr. 7-9 in Tempe, Ariz. The Beavers then head to Stanford for their last tournament before the Pacific-10 Championships Apr. 24-26 in Eugene.
