Oregon State (16-11 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) becomes the last Pacific-10 team to enter conference play this season when it plays host to UCLA (16-11, 2-1) in a three-game series. The Beavers go into the Pac-10 season well ahead of where they were entering conference games a year ago.
In 1999, OSU didn't earn its 16th win until May 7, this spring, it took until only March 26. And Oregon State has already matched its home win total of a year ago by winning six of its first eight games at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
That tells you that the Beavers are better. OSU head coach Pat Casey will tell you his team still has a long way to go in order to be competitive in one of the toughest Pac-10 aggregations in years.
"This conference is absolutely loaded," Casey said. "You look at the talent on teams like Stanford, Arizona State, Southern California ... all the way down the list. We're a better ballclub than we were a year ago, but we're really going to have to improve in a lot of areas to have some success against this kind of opponent.
"It all starts this weekend against a UCLA club that may have as much talent as anybody in the conference. They won eight in a row not long ago and they're playing pretty well, so we've got our work cut out for us."
What Casey would like to see from the Beavers is cutting down on strikeouts at the plate and using offensive outs more productively, some sharper defense, and a more effective bullpen.
"Those are the areas that have stood out where we need to make some adjustments and improve," Casey said. "It's not that we've been awful in those places - it's just that to be a good club in the Pac-10, we're going to have to do a better job."
Casey has been impressed by how OSU has managed to put things together after losing five of its first six games. Since then, Oregon State has won 15 of its last 21 games.
"We've got some guys out there who are finding ways to win games, and it's been a number of different guys in different situations," Casey said. "That's something we struggled with all of last season. There's a lot to be said for getting that feeling of knowing how to win games, and how to win close games. We've had to come back a few times and we've had to hold on a few times, and our guys have been able to build some confidence through that."
The Beavers have also rediscovered the home-field advantage.
"Hopefully, that's something we're starting to build again - a pride in how we play at home," Casey said. "With this ballpark (Goss Stadium at Coleman Field), we've got one of the nicest places around to play or watch a game, and we've had some good, vocal crowds already this year.
"And there's a huge tradition of Oregon State playing good baseball in this park, and I think our guys have picked up on that. The winning percentage over 90-some years is something like 70 percent (actually .703 in 90-plus seasons), and we've got a group that wants to defend the home yard and build on that. We want to be good hosts, but we want teams coming in here knowing they're going to have a tough time against our club and that there are going to be some people in the seats and there's going to be some noise."
UCLA opened the Pac-10 season at home last weekend, taking two of three games from Washington. The Bruins won 2-1 on March 25, lost 7-6 on March 26 and won 12-5 on March 27.
Junior outfielder Bill Scott leads the Bruins with a .394 batting average with 10 homers and 32 runs batted in, while junior second baseman Chase Utley is batting .370 with 10 homers and 28 RBIs, junior outfielder Nick Lyon is batting .348 with 7 homers and 18 RBIs, junior infielder Garrett Atkins is batting .343 with 9 homers and 30 RBIs and junior catcher Forrest Johnson is batting .343 with 11 homers and 34 RBIs.
Junior lefthander Bobby Roe is 4-2 with a 4.10 earned run average, junior lefthander Rob Henkel is 4-1 with a 4.14 ERA and sophomore righthander Josh Karp is 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA.

ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time record of 7-13 against UCLA in a series dating back to 1967, and the Beavers are on a 2-game losing streak against the Bruins. Last season the teams met in a 3-game series in Los Angeles, with OSU winning the opener 7-5 and UCLA taking the final 2 games by scores of 15-0 and 8-6. The last meeting in Corvallis was a 3-game series to end the 1998 season, and Oregon State swept UCLA by scores of 8-7, 19-5 and 11-8.

Last week, senior first baseman Joe Gerber batted .417 (5-for-12) with 3 doubles, 8 RBIs and 4 walks ... junior infielder Zach Gordon batted .307 (4-for-13) last week with 1 homer and 3 RBIs ...freshman shortstop Will Hudson returned to the lineup for the second game of a March 25 doubleheader against Cal State-Northridge and batted .600 (3-for-5) with 1 double and 2 RBIs in the final 2 games of the series.
LAST WEEK: Oregon State took 3 of 4 games from Cal State-Northridge in a non-league series at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers won 10-9 on March 24, lost the first game 9-7 and won the second 9-3 in a March 25 doubleheader, and won the finale 11-8 on March 26.
On March 24, the Beavers overcame an early 5-run deficit to win 10-9 by scoring 4 runs in the fourth inning and 6 more in the seventh. Joe Gerber was 2-for-3 and had a 3-run double in the seventh inning, while Tim Dryden was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs. Scott Nicholson earned the win with 8 1/3 innings, allowing 9 runs (4 earned) on 12 hits and 4 walks, striking out 4.
On March 25, Thad Johnson pitched the Beavers to a split by tossing a 6-hitter in the second game as OSU won 9-3. Johnson didn't walk a batter while striking out 9. Joe Gerber delivered another 3-run double for OSU in the Beavers' 5-run fourth inning and finished the game with 4 RBIs, Josh Carter, Dryden, Eric Stark and Will Hudson all had 2 hits each for the Beavers and Zach Gordon homered in the second game. In the opener, CSUN used a 5-run eighth inning to take control of a see-saw game and won 9-7. Mark Newell took the loss for OSU, while Stark was 2-for-5 with his first career homer for the Beavers and Gerber and Bryan Ingram both had 2 hits each.
On March 26, Oregon State again had to rally for an 11-8 victory. Stephen Copeland picked up the win with 7 1/3 innings, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks, striking out 3. Stark homered for the second straight day to put OSU in front for good in the fourth inning, while Drew Hedges also homered and drove in 3 runs and Dryden added 3 RBIs. Hedges and Josh Carter had 2 hits each for Oregon State.
HEAD COACH PAT CASEY: Pat Casey is in his sixth season as Oregon State's head baseball coach. Casey currently has a record of 165-112-4 with the Beavers for a winning percentage of .594. His career record is 336-225-5, which includes 7 years at George Fox University in Newberg, for a winning percentage of .598.
Casey is the fourth OSU baseball head coach to reach 100 victories at the school, following Ralph Coleman (561), Gene Tanselli (115) and Jack Riley (613). Casey picked up his 100th OSU victory on Feb. 21, 1998 at San Diego.
Casey came to OSU from his alma mater, George Fox, after leading the Bruins to a 171-113-1 record and winning 3 NAIA District 2 titles at the school in Newberg, Ore.
ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE JOE GERBER: Oregon State first baseman Joe Gerber (Portland, Ore./Grant HS) is coming off one of the finest offensive seasons in school history, and the senior has already begun collecting honors for 2000. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Gerber to its preseason All-America second team.
This season, Gerber is batting .375 with 15 doubles, 3 home runs and 41 runs batted in. Gerber's hefty RBI total this spring has been the product of uncanny clutch hitting - he is batting .508 with runners on base and .564 with runners in scoring position in 2000.
Gerber tied the OSU record for career homers on March 20 against Central Michigan when he hit his 28th, and he set the OSU record for career doubles on March 12 against Washington State when he hit his 37th. He needs just 1 RBI to tie OSU's career record of 143.
Gerber's 41 RBIs this season put him over two-thirds of the way to OSU's single-season record with over half this season's schedule remaining to be played. Gerber's 15 doubles this season tie him for ninth place on OSU's single-season list, only 4 away from tying the school record for a season.
From Feb. 24 to March 18, Gerber had a 12-game hitting streak in which he batted .473 (26-for-55) with 9 doubles, 1 homer and 24 RBIs. Gerber also had an errorless streak of 67 games that stretched over the final 42 games of 1999 and the first 25 games of 2000.
Gerber has also pitched once this season, throwing a 7-inning complete-game win over Central Michigan on March 20.
STARK'S SUDDEN POWER: Junior outfielder Eric Stark went the first 104 games of his Oregon State career without hitting a home run, then homered on back-to-back days. On March 25, he hit a 3-run shot to left-centerfield as OSU dropped the first game of a doubleheader to visiting Cal State-Northridge. On March 26, he hit a 2-run homer to put give OSU the lead for good in the series finale against the Matadors.
PRODUCTIVE SWAP FOR ATWOOD, COPELAND: When Oregon State played in the Continental Express Classic at Texas A&M on March 18-20, the Beavers were without freshman infielders Will Hudson and Brian Barden due to injuries. Freshman Stephen Copeland stepped in at second base and had a productive tournament, but OSU needed Copeland to pitch the tourney's final game against the Aggies.
That meant the Beavers had to turn to senior pitcher James Atwood to fill in at second base, Atwood had also played some infield last season at NAIA Albertson College. Copeland wound up pitching a 7-hitter and not allowing an earned run as OSU took a 6-1 win, Atwood went 2-for-3, scored 3 runs and cut off a Texas A&M rally by gunning down an Aggie at the plate with a relay throw.
OREGON STATE'S 12-GAME OFFENSIVE SURGE: Oregon State rediscovered the joy of hitting on Feb. 24, as the Beavers began a 12-game run of outstanding offensive production that lasted until March 18. While posting a 10-2 record to get back over the .500 mark, OSU batted .382 as a team and averaged 11.25 runs per game. During that span, Oregon State hit .419 with runners on base and .458 with runners in scoring position as a team. OSU had at least 10 hits in every one of the 12 games, and the Beavers' 27-4 win at Washington on March 5 was the fourth-largest margin of victory in Beaver baseball history.
ALL-TIME RECORD: Oregon State's all-time record in varsity baseball is now 1,648-1,125-15, a winning percentage of .594. The Beavers' all-time win total ranked 40th among all NCAA Division I schools entering the 2000 season.
OSU's all-time record in conference games is now 740-518, a winning percentage of .588.
To break the numbers down one step further, since starting varsity baseball in 1907, the Beavers have scored 18,229 runs and allowed 13,841 runs. That's an average score of 6.54-4.96.
In its 90-plus seasons of varsity baseball, OSU has had 67 winning seasons, the Beavers finished at .500 another 4 seasons. The Beavers have won 20 pennants through the years. Oregon State began fielding a varsity baseball team in 1907 and has failed to field a team only 3 times since then - in 1917 due to World War I and in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.
GOSS STADIUM AT COLEMAN FIELD: Oregon State has been playing on the same site since starting varsity baseball in 1907, making Goss Stadium at Coleman Field the oldest diamond in the Pacific-10 and one of the oldest in the country.
In 90-plus seasons at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, the Beavers are 858-363-1 all-time at home for a winning percentage of .703. Oregon State is 6-2 at home this season. Since the start of the 1993 season, OSU is 107-34 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field for a winning percentage of .759.
Goss Stadium was added to Coleman Field over the winter of 1998-99. The ballpark holds 2,000 fans, with the main grandstand seating 1,500 of those. The structure includes a press box, concession/lobby area, dugouts, locker rooms, restrooms and storage areas.
The playing surface has been completely rebuilt recently, with the infield undergoing renovation in 1996 and the outfield in 1998.
OSU HOSTS A SOUTHERN FOE: Cal State-Northridge's visit to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on March 24-26 is believed to be the first time Oregon State hosted a non-Pacific-10 school from a southern region. The only possible exceptions - and this is really stretching it - were home games in 1924 and 1929 against Meiji University of Japan, which is located at roughly the same latitude as California. For the record, Oregon State beat Meiji 7-0 in 1924 and lost 13-6 in 1929, this season, OSU took 3 of 4 games against Cal State-Northridge.
BEAVER ATTENDANCE: Throught four home dates, Oregon State is averaging 478 fans per date. OSU averaged 672 fans per home date in 1999 and drew three crowds of 1,000 or more for home games that season.
In the past 2-plus seasons, OSU has drawn 9 crowds of 1,000 or more after having just 5 crowds of 1,000 or more in the first 8 seasons of the 1990s.
BEAVERS FACE TOP-FLIGHT SCHEDULE: Again this spring, Oregon State will play one of the nation's most challenging schedules. The Beavers have 12 games scheduled against teams in the March 27 USA Today coaches poll - No. 3 Stanford, No. 7 Arizona State, No. 16 Southern California and No. 19 Fresno State. OSU has 8 more games against teams that received votes in the poll but did not make the top 25 - Nevada, Texas A&M, Central Michigan and Ohio State.

OREGON STATE BASEBALL TICKETS: Season tickets for Oregon State's 22-date home schedule are now on sale. The tickets, which are $100 per seat, guarantee the same theater-style seat at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field for all Beaverhome games in 2000.
Single-game reserved seat tickets for OSU baseball are $6 each. Single-game general admission tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students through high school and senior citizens age 62 and over.
OSU students are admitted free with their All-Sports Pass. If they have not purchased an All-Sports Pass, OSU students are admitted for $1 with their student identification card.

TELEVISION BRINGS OUT BEST IN BEAVERS: Oregon State has been slated for a national cable television game in 2000, that coming when the Beavers play host to Stanford on May 6 in a game that will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net. The schedule for telecasts in the Pacific Northwest has yet to be announced by Fox Sports Net.
Oregon State has played on national cable television twice in the last 2 seasons, and the Beavers are 2-0 in those games. In 1999, OSU dedicated Goss Stadium at Coleman Field by beating California 11-5. In 1998, the Beavers beat Arizona 3-2 in a game marking the first visit to Corvallis by a Southern Division team in 27 years.
Oregon State wrapped up the 1990s with a 25-13 record in televised games, including 7-1 in national TV games.
OREGON STATE RADIO BROADCASTS: Oregon State baseball will again be broadcast this spring on KLOO-AM (1340) in Corvallis, with almost the entire Beaver schedule on the air. Some games may be pre-empted due to programming conflicts. Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers, will handle the play-by-play duties along with John Warren and Kip Carlson.
OREGON STATE DUGOUT CLUB: The Oregon State Dugout Club is an organization devoted to the support of Beaver baseball. The group is open to the general public, dues are $75 per year.
Also, anyone entering the OSU Dugout Club Golf Tournament automatically gains club membership. This year's tournament will be held June 12 at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River.
Over the past several seasons, projects financed by the OSU Dugout Club include batting cages at Coleman Field, helping finance trips that upgrade the quality of the Beavers' non-league schedule, and carpeting the baseball locker room in Gill Coliseum.
