March 25, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The No. 17 Oregon State women kicked off their spring crew season with races against No. 21 Washington State and the University of Victoria on Saturday on the Snake River.
OSU's varsity eight lost by just 2.30 seconds to a strong WSU squad. Washington State squeaked out a win over Victoria in the same race by 0.36 seconds.
"Overall, the team raced pretty well," OSU coach Charlie Owen said of the races. "We found some things we can do better. It was the first race of the season, so we have time to improve."
The Beavers' second varsity eight rowed to a time of 6:46.32 to beat WSU by nine seconds. Victoria won that race in 6:44.07 to edge the Beavers to the finish line by 2.25 seconds.
"It was the first time we beat WSU in a long time," Owen said. "It's good for our program."
OSU's second novice eight defeated WSU by 11.69 seconds, finishing in 7:08.20.
In varsity four racing, OSU's `A' team finished second to WSU by 10.95 seconds with a time of 7:47.95.
Both the men's and women's teams will race in the San Diego Crew Classic on Apr. 1-2, which will be the first racing of the spring season for the men.
"We're looking forward to racing in San Diego next week," Owen said.
