Arvidson Claims Individual Title In Playoff At Duck Invitational
March 21, 2000
JUNCTION CITY, Ore. - - Oregon State golfer Anthony Arvidson captured the individual title at the Oregon Duck Invitational on Tuesday by carding a birdie on the first playoff hole. The Beavers finished six strokes behind No. 20 Washington and five back of tournament host Oregon, to take third with a score of 1-under 863.
Arvidson, a junior, entered the final round three shots back of the leaders, but battled his way to a 1-under 71 on the Shadow Hills Country Club course to force a playoff with Lucas Horrobin of San Jose State. Arvidson then birdied the first playoff hole - the par-5 18th - after reaching the green in two and two-putting for the third victory of his career.
"Anthony is having a great year," OSU coach Mike Ketcham said. "This is his third win in 2 ˝ years. He just continues to get better every tournament."
Arvidson, who won the Duck Invitational as a freshman two years ago, added the win to a season in which he already has a victory and a second place finish.
The Beavers entered Tuesday's final round in fourth place, but carded a 287 to take third. Bryan Geiberger tied for 31st at 222 and Eric Dahm tied for 67th with a 231.
"I'm pleased with today's round," said Ketcham. "We were very consistent over the three days, but we've got to get better decision-making. The mistakes we made were definitely not fundamental mistakes, but poor decisions," Ketcham said, in reference to OSU shooting 17-over on the par-3s.
"On the plus side, we played the par-4s and par-5s extremely well. I'm proud of our guys," Ketcham said.
Four other Oregon State golfers competed as individuals in the tournament, so their scores did not count towards OSU's team total.
Tim Mickelson tied his season-low round with a 69, and finished at 218. Todd Deacon shot a season-best 221, Kyle Hudson 223, and Chance Holmes carded a 231.
Troy Kelly of Washington finished one stroke behind Horrobin in third, as did fellow Washington teammate Scott Kral.
Oregon State's next golf will be Apr. 3-4 when they travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. to compete in the Western Invitational.
