HOT SHOOTING: Oregon State had its hottest shooting night of the season in downing USC 73-66 on (2/24). Beavers shot .694, just below their school record of .702 (40-57) vs. Washington in 1981, which is also the Pacific-10 Conference record. OSU shot .600 in the first half (12-20) and .813 in the second half (13-16) vs. the Trojans.
BEAVERS TIE SCHOOL RECORD FOR FREE THROW PERCENTAGE: For a team ranked last in the Pac-10 Conference for free throw shooting accuracy, it was probably a surprise for Oregon State to equal its own school record for free throw percentage in a game. The Beavers did just that in their 79-77 overtime loss at Arizona. OSU hit 11 of 12 shots from the line for a .917 percentage, the same mark and numbers registered by the Beavers in a game against Washington on 2/26/87, which was also a 2-point defeat (69-67). OSU's only miss against the Wildcats was by Sissel Pierce who went 1 for 2.
CHASSIE WIERSMA CHASING RECORD: Speaking of free throws, sophomore guard Chassie Wiersma was red hot at the free throw line at the conclusion of the season and made her last 17 shots in a row, dating back to Washington (2/17), a stretch of seven games. The OSU school record for consecutive free throws made is 19 by Jennifer Busen in 1997. Chassie shot .828 from the line in 1999-2000, which would is the third best ever by a Beaver player in one season. She shot .844 in Pac-10 games only, which ranked fifth in the conference.
PIERCE EARNED PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR: Senior center Sissel Pierce earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors (2/28) after helping OSU to victories over USC and UCLA. Pierce averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots and 1.5 assists per game, and shot 68 percent from the field (17 for 25) and .714 from the line (5 for 7). It is the second time in Pierce's career that she has won the honor and the 20th all-time selection for Oregon State.
FREE THROW SHOOTING CONTINUED TO IMPROVE: As a team, Oregon State struggled at the free throw line during the preseason, but continued to show constant improvement during Pac-10 play. The Beavers finished preseason play with a .518 percentage from the line, which was dead last in the Pac-10. OSU improved to .602 overall and is .653 in conference play. Two of the Beavers' frontcourt players struggled at the line, which hurt OSU a great deal as they both led the club in attempts. Reda Petraitis hit only 33 of 83 (.398) and Sissel Pierce shot .489, making only 43 of 88 attempts. However, with the game on the line at USC (1/29), Pierce sank two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to protect the OSU victory. Earlier in Pac-10 play, Cherrith Wiersma sank a pair of free throws to give OSU a 1-point lead over California (1/15) and Syesha Thomas canned a pair with :04 seconds left to ensure a 53-50 victory over the Bears. Felicia Ragland canned a pair of free throws with :07 seconds left at WSU to preserve a 65-62 victory on February 19. The Beavers' top free throw shooter does not get many opportunities. Chassie Wiersma shot .828, but had only went to the line 64 times, hitting 53. She needed 60 free throws made to qualify among the Pac-10 leaders. Felicia Ragland had made 11 straight free throws before missing against USC (2/24). Ragland improved her percentage to .747 overall and .779 in conference play. OSU opponents shot .709 at the foul line and made 105 more shots. The Beavers were last in the Pac-10 at .602 free throw percentage, while UCLA was ninth at .656.
