Lepak Takes Second At Southwestern Invitational
Feb. 29, 2000
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - - John Lepak fired a three-round total of 1-under 212 to capture second place and lead Oregon State to a tie for eighth at the Southwestern Invitational men's golf tournament on Tuesday.
"John had a fantastic performance this week," said OSU head coach Mike Ketcham. "I'm real proud of him. Unfortunately, he double-bogeyed the last hole to lose by a hole."
Bryan Geiberger came on strong Tuesday with a 69 to help the Beavers to a final-round 290, which was their low score for the tournament.
"The team played a real solid round today, but yesterday we fell behind a little bit and had to count two bad rounds of 80 and 81," said Ketcham, referring to Monday's second round 302. "But all teams go through that at some point and we'll just see how we do next week."
Eric Dahm also had a solid performance, finishing tied for 21st at 219. It was the third time Dahm has finished 21st or better this year.
Tuesday was the second time this season that Lepak - a sophomore who was named to the Pacific-10 Conference First Team last season as a freshman - has captured a second-place finish, the other was at the Northwest Classic. The Southwestern also marked the fifth top-13 finish for Lepak this year.
Oregon's Ryan Lavoie edged out Lepak for medalist honors, shooting 211 over the three rounds. Oregon ended up third, but Arizona State ran away with the team title at 856, which was only 4-over par on the par-71 North Ranch Country Club course.
Oregon State's next action will be Mar. 20-21at the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
