Women's Hoops Squad Putting Pressure On Pac-10 Leaders
Feb. 28, 2000
HOTTEST TEAM IN PAC-10--OREGON STATE:
All of the sudden the Pac-10 championship race is really heating up, and don't look now, but the Oregon State Beavers are right in the thick of the race after recording a series sweep on the road at Washington and Washington State and following that up with home victories over USC and No. 22 ranked UCLA. As a result, the Beavers are just 1 1/2 games out of first place (Stanford), one game out of second (Oregon) and 1/2 game out of third place (Arizona). OSU meets the Wildcats in Tucson on Thursday and Oregon in Eugene to close out the season on March 10.
BEAVERS WILL HAVE A SAY IN RACE:
Oregon State could have a lot to say about the final standings in the Pac-10 Conference. The Beavers have three games remaining and will face two of the three teams--Oregon and Arizona--ahead of them in the standings in the final two weeks of the season. Between Arizona and Oregon, OSU plays at Arizona State on Saturday, and the Beavers have not won at Tempe since 1996.
COMMENTS FROM COACH JUDY SPOELSTRA
ON VICTORIES OVER USC AND UCLA:
"I think our players came out with great mental focus against USC. We were able to jump on them early and then were able to sustain throughout the game. I think we had tremendous composure throughout the game. It was a very physical game. We made the smart plays down the stretch. We did not have a turnover in the last five minutes of the game. The UCLA game was an exciting win for us. Our players had the confidence they could win that game and didn't doubt that for a moment. We took care of the basketball and knocked down some key shots at the end of the game. We had outstanding play from both Sissel Pierce and Felicia Ragland in that game. It was a great victory for our team and fans."
ON BEING NO. 1 DEFENSIVE TEAM IN PAC-10:
"If you look at our films from last year to this year you would see that there were a lot of holes in our defense last year. We started four freshmen last year and that was tough. We needed to learn how to trust each other on defense. Certainly, from the start of this season to now, individually our players have improved tremendously in every aspect of the game. When we have a player like Sissel Pierce in practice it certainly helps to be able to funnel our defense down to her. Our perimeter players can go and have the freedom to play because they know they have tremendous support from Sissel, Reda (Petraitis) and Ericka (Cook) behind them. It is all about trust on defense. It is not about gimmicks. I would venture to say that we work harder than any other team in the conference on defense."
ON LEADING PAC-10 IN REBOUNDING:
"If you saw us in the pool you would think our average body fat is probably about 11 percent which is very lean. Rebounding is a desire stat. In fact, all of the stats that we lead the Pac-10 in are all about effort. I think when you have players like the Wiersma twins and Felicia, who really believe and have the mentality of seniors like Sissel and Reda, then you have five players on the floor every day in practice lead by example and desire. I don't think it is any secret why we are ranked high in every desire statistical category in this conference because our players have great work ethic."
ON ARIZONA GAME:
"It is an important weekend coming up and Thursday night is the most important. We need to make sure this week that we prepare mentally the same way we have the past two weeks. This is another opportunity for us to go out and win a game, and that is how we look at it. We were really tight against Arizona at home. Our kids were extremely nervous and we didn't come out of the shoot very well and we let them get open on the inside of our zone quite a bit and we allowed them too many offensive put backs early in the game. When you get behind early against a great team like Arizona it makes it tough to come back, not impossible, but just difficult. I think we will be more relaxed this time around."
ON ARIZONA STATE GAME:
"Arizona State has great balance in terms of perimeter shooting, good guard play on the outside in terms of ball handling and passing, and terrific post play. When we played in Corvallis we were able to neutralize some of the post play inside and I hope we can continue to do that. Our defense was phenomenal against UCLA's Martin (Maylana) and Hubbard (Janae) inside. We must have the same kind of defensive work on the inside against two very strong teams this week."
SPOELSTRA RECORD:
Judy Spoelstra (Oregon State, '83) is in her fifth season as the Beavers' head coach. Spoelstra is 61-74 (.452) in five seasons at OSU and she is 159-142 (.528) in 11 seasons as a collegiate head coach, her first six being at Montana State.
300TH GAME FOR SPOELSTRA:
OSU's game with USC (2/24), a 73-66 Beaver victory, was Coach Judy Spoelstra's 300th as a collegiate head coach.
HOT SHOOTING:
Oregon State had its hottest shooting night of the season in downing USC 73-66 on Thursday night (2/24). Beavers shot .694, just below their school record of .702 (40-57) vs. Washington in 1981, which is also the Pacific-10 Conference record. OSU SETS PAC-10 DEFENSIVE RECORD:
Oregon State established a Pac-10 defensive record in its 52-33 victory over California (2/10). By holding the Bears to 33 points, it was the fewest points scored by a Pac-10 team in a conference game. The previous low was 36 points scored by California against Stanford (87) in 1996 and 36 by the Bears against Oregon (75) in 1995. Now the Beavers hold the record for defense in a conference game and for all games. OSU holds the record for fewest points allowed when it limited UC Irvine to only 24 points in a 63-24 victory on December 9, 1989. California scored 15 points in the first half and 18 in the second half. The Beavers' record for fewest points allowed in a half is 13 in the first half and 11 in the second half, both marks were against UC Irvine.
STRONG DEFENSE:
Oregon State leads the Pac-10 in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Beavers are allowing only 59.9 points a game and opponents are shooting only .385 vs. OSU. The Beavers are also first in blocked shots at 5.1 a game, third in steals at 10.07 per game and top the conference in rebounding at +5.5 per game. OSU is forcing an average of 19.8 turnovers a game. Reda Petraitis tops OSU in steals with 68, which ranks second in the Pac-10. Eight players have 12 or more steals. The Beavers have held 13 opponents under a .400 shooting mark to date, including eight of the last 12 games, which were all victories for OSU. The Beavers limited California (2/10) to an opponents season-low .226 from the field and Washington shot only .254 at Seattle against the Beavers..
PIERCE OWNS ALL OSU BLOCKED SHOTS RECORDS:
Oregon State senior center Sissel Pierce now owns all of the Beavers' records for blocked shots, plus she is moving up the Pac-10 season and career charts. She holds the career record (168), the single-season record (77), by getting a blocked shot at Washington State (2/19), and the single-game record (8). Pierce had a single-game record eight blocked shots against Arizona State (2/4), topping her old mark of seven, which she had set twice earlier this season against Hawaii (12/11) and Portland (12/29). Sissel currently ranks fifth in career blocked shots in the Pac-10 Conference and ninth in single-season blocked shots. She needs two blocks to move into fourth place in Pac-10 career blocks. Pierce entered the ASU game needing three blocked shots to become the Beavers' career shot blocker and she got eight. She is the fifth player in Oregon State history to record 100 or more blocked shots in a career. In her last 19 games, Pierce has blocked 65 shots. Pierce surpassed Carol Menken-Schaudt (1981) for first place in season blocked shots with her 70th vs.
TOWER OF STRENGTH ON THE BOARDS:
Oregon State has been a strong rebounding team the entire season and has led the Pac-10 Conference in rebounding, except for one week, the entire season. The Beavers and Arizona have been one-two in rebounding the entire season, and after Wildcats out rebounded OSU 48-38 at Corvallis (2/6), Arizona moved ahead of OSU for one game. The Beavers are back on top with a +5.5, compared to +5.0 by the Wildcats. OSU has held a rebounding edge in 18 of 27 games to date. The Beavers are strong on the offensive boards with 432, compared to 342 by opponents. OSU is second in the Pac-10 in offensive boards with 16.00 average. Reda Petraitis is the Beavers' top rebounder at 7.3 and ranks fourth in the Pac-10. Sissel Pierce ranks sixth in rebounding (6.3) and Felicia Ragland ranks ninth at 6.0
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:
Oregon State players have notched 11 double-double games this season, the latest by Felicia Ragland against UCLA (2/26). Ragland had 14 points and 10 rebounds. It was Ragland's third this season and fifth career double-double. The Beavers' last double-double game prior to Ragland was recorded by Sissel Pierce vs. USC (1/29). Pierce recorded her sixth double-double of the season and 12th of her career with a 18-point, 12-rebound performance at USC. Oregon State has had four players produce double-doubles to date this season. Sophomore center Ericka Cook recorded her first career double-double with a 16-point, 10-rebound performance against Idaho State on November 26. Pierce went on a four game double-double streak starting with Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and continuing with Colorado, Colorado State and Portland. In addition to Pierce scoring a double-double in the Wisconsin-Milwaukee game at the Hawaii Invitational Tournament, Reda Petraitis had her first career double-double in the game (12 points, 17 rebounds), and Felicia Ragland produced her third career double-double in the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds. When Pierce, Petraitis and Ragland produced double-doubles vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, it was the first time in OSU history that three Beaver players produced double-doubles in the same game. Pierce opened Pac-10 play with her fifth double-double of the season and 11th career double with 17 points and 10 rebounds vs. Oregon. ON THE CHARTS:
Felicia Ragland is currently eighth on OSU's season 3-point shot made top-10 list with 26. She is tied for fourth on the season 3-point attempt list with 90. Sissel Pierce is 9th in career rebounding with 541. Her next stop is Tanya Mothershed who is eighth with 577. As she currently stands, Pierce has a .529 career shooting percentage mark which put her fourth on OSU's all-time list. Pierce has 979 career points, needing 21 more points to become the 12th player in OSU history to reach 1,000 points in a career.
FREE THROW SHOOTING CONTINUES TO IMPROVE:
As a team, Oregon State struggled at the free throw line during the preseason, but has shown constant improvement during Pac-10 play. The Beavers finished preseason play with a .518 percentage from the line, which was dead last in the Pac-10. OSU has improved to .587 overall and is .635 in conference play. Two of the Beavers' frontcourt players have struggled this year at the line, which has hurt OSU a great deal as they both lead the club in attempts. Reda Petraitis has hit only 29 of 77 (.377) and Sissel Pierce is shooting .482, making only 40 of 83 attempts. However, with the game on the line at USC (1/29), Pierce sank two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to protect the OSU victory. Earlier in Pac-10 play, Cherrith Wiersma sank a pair of free throws to give OSU a 1-point lead over California (1/15) and Syesha Thomas canned a pair with :04 seconds left to ensure a 53-50 victory over the Bears. Felicia Ragland canned a pair of free throws with :07 seconds left at WSU to preserve a 65-62 victory on February 19. The Beavers' top free throw shooter does not get many opportunities. Chassie Wiersma is shooting .796, but has only been to the line 54 times, hitting 43. Felicia Ragland had made 11 straight free throws before missing against USC (2/24). Ragland has improved her percentage to .736 overall and .766 in conference play. OSU opponents are shooting .701 at the foul line and have made 77 more shots. The Beavers are last in the Pac-10 at .587 free throw percentage, while California is ninth at .660.
THE FIRST TIME AROUND:
In the first meeting this season, Arizona dominated Oregon State at Corvallis on February 6, winning 65-49. It was the Beavers' worst shooting game of the season. OSU hit only 13 of 61 shots for a .213 percentage and had its lowest offensive point total of the season. Felicia Ragland led OSU with 14 points and Ericka Cook had 11. Elizabeth Pickney had 17 points to lead Arizona and was the only Wildcat player to score in double figures, but Arizona had 12 players score in the contest. The Wildcats shot .400 and held a 48-38 advantage on the boards, with Pickney leading with 11. The Beavers defeated ASU 64-51 on 2/4 at Corvallis. Ragland had 18 points, followed by Sissel Pierce with 16 and Chassie Wiersma with 12 and Reda Petraitis had 12 rebounds. The Sun Devils got 12 points from Rachel Holt and Kristine Sand and 10 from Natalie Tucker. OSU shot .467 for the game, compared to .333 by ASU. The Beavers held a commanding 43-31 edge in rebounds. OSU had 13 steals to help fuel its defense.
NOTES:
Oregon State's sweep of Washington and Washington State, both home and away, this season amounts to the first such sweep since 1983...during the 1983 season, the Beavers won all four meetings with the Huskies and both games against the Cougars...Oregon State has also recorded series sweeps over California and USC this year and a victory over ASU on Saturday would give the Beavers a sweep over the Sun Devils and a total of five conference opponents... OSU has made 57 more field goals than its opponents, but has made 87 less free throws...the Beavers lead the Pac-10 in blocked shots with 5.07 per game, with Sissel Pierce ranked second in the nation with 2.96 average...Felicia Ragland is eighth in the Pac-10 in scoring (12.9), fifth in steals (2.19) and ninth in rebounding (6.0)...Reda Petraitis is fourth in rebounding (7.3) and second in steals with 2.56 per game...Sissel Pierce ranks sixth in rebounding (6.3), ranks 10th in scoring (12.7), leads the conference in blocked shots, averaging 2.96 per game and is sixth in field goal shooting percentage at .523...OSU is last in scoring offense, averaging 60.8 per game, but leads in scoring defense, yielding 59.9 points per game, in field goal pct. defense at .385 and in rebounding at +5.5.
SENIORS GO OUT WITH BANG:
Oregon State's two graduating seniors, Sissel Pierce and Reda Petraitis, played in their final game in a Beaver uniform at Gill Coliseum against UCLA last Saturday night. They led OSU to a 72-52 upset victory over the No. 22 ranked Bruins. Pierce had 21 points, hitting 10 of 16 from the field, and had 4 blocked shots. Petraitis had 7 points , 3 rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. Their contribution defensively was just as big. The vaunted UCLA front-line accounted for only 20 points, 8 by Maylana Martin, 8 by Janae Hubbard and 4 by Maria Philman. Martin had 39 points in her previous outing at Oregon.
PIERCE EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR:
Senior center Sissel Pierce earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors after helping OSU to victories over USC and UCLA this past week. Pierce averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots and 1.5 assists per game, and shot 68 percent from the field (17 for 25) and .714 from the line (5 for 7). It is the second time in Pierce's career that she has won the honor and the 20th all-time selection for Oregon State.
BUS TRIP TO OREGON:
"Oregon State basketball fans wishing to make the trip to Eugene next Friday (March 10) can take advantage of riding a booster bus, which will leave Gill Coliseum at 5:30 p.m. and return to Gill following the game. Cost of the round-trip bus ride, which also includes a game ticket, is $25.00 apiece. Reservations must be made through Susan Tharp in the women's basketball office. Call 737-2800 for bus reservations.
