OSU baseball gets closer to home

SUNDAY, MARCH 7

Oregon State (8-9 overall) will have to wait at least one more week for its home opener, but at least the Beavers get to stay a little closer to home this week. Because of the ongoing construction of Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, OSU's series against Gonzaga (3-4) has been moved to Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.
"We were really hoping to be able to open the new stadium this week," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "But even if we aren't able to do that this week, at least our guys will have a week where they're not climbing on a plane Thursday or Friday and getting back late Sunday night. I think they'll appreciate being able to have a week that's a little less hectic."
Oregon State is hopeful that Goss Stadium at Coleman Field will be ready by next weekend, when the Beavers are scheduled to play host to defending national champion Southern California in the opening series of the Pacific-10 Conference schedule.
Even if construction is still going on, the Beavers are looking forward to at least being able to move practices out of McAlexander Fieldhouse and back onto Coleman Field. With the exception of batting practice before games, OSU hasn't been able to hold an outdoor practice session this season.
"It will be great to finally have some full-scale workouts," Casey said. "But not being outside doesn't have much to do with our biggest problem right now."
That would be hitting in general, and hitting with runners in scoring position in particular. The Beavers got four solid performances from starting pitchers last week and lost three of those games because they didn't provide any support at the plate.
"It's been a long, long time since I've seen a club going this badly," Casey said. "We've got a lot of kids being put in some pressure situations at this level for the first time, but we've also got a lot of guys who have been here before who aren't coming through the way they have to for us to be successful.
"All we can do is keep preparing them and hope that pretty quick here they'll step up and take on the challenge."

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time record of 50-25 against Gonzaga and is on a two-game win streak in a series that dates back to 1919. The last meeting was a 5-3 OSU win at the Lewis-Clark State Banana Belt Tournament in 1997; Gonzaga's last win was 2-1 in Spokane in 1995.
INJURY REPORT: Freshman catcher Chris Biles is out for the season after suffering a knee injury last fall. Out for this week are senior outfielder Rudy Zarfas with a hand injury; junior infielder Craig Avery with a shoulder injury and sophomore pitcher Don Stykel with an arm injury.
LAST WEEK: Oregon State faltered at the plate last week, and it cost the Beavers as they were swept in a four-game series at Santa Clara before winning a getaway game at San Jose State.
On Feb. 26, B.R. Cook threw a four-hitter at Santa Clara but OSU hit into three double plays in a 3-1 loss.
On Feb. 27, the first game saw OSU take a three-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, only to see Santa Clara score four times to take the lead for good on the way to a 7-4 win. In the second game, Pat Versluis threw a seven-hitter but was beaten 1-0 when Santa Clara scored a run on three straight singles with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
On Feb. 28, OSU's pitchers gave up 15 hits in a 12-9 loss to Santa Clara. The Beavers trailed 12-6 going into the ninth inning but eventually got the tying run on base, only to have the rally fall short.
On March 1, Oregon State finally ended its losing streak at five games when Rod Gott's two-run double provided the winning runs in a 3-2 victory at San Jose State. Craig Hays went five innings to get his first collegiate win, and Cook picked up the save.
HEAD COACH PAT CASEY: Pat Casey is in his fifth season as Oregon State's head baseball coach. He has a record of 138-75-4 with the Beavers for a winning percentage of .645. His career record is 309-188-5, which includes 7 years at George Fox University in Newberg, and is good for a winning percentage of .621.
Casey is the fourth OSU baseball head coach to reach 100 victories at the school, following Ralph Coleman (561), Gene Tanselli (115) and Jack Riley (613). Casey, who picked up his 100th OSU victory on Feb. 21, 1998 at San Diego, reached the century mark quickest, as it took Coleman until his ninth season at Oregon State and it took both Tanselli and Riley until their fifth seasons.
Casey came to OSU from George Fox after leading the Bruins to a 171-113-1 record and 3 NAIA District 2 titles.
ALL-TIME RECORD: Oregon State's all-time record in varsity baseball is now 1,624-1,088-15, a winning percentage of .598. OSU's all-time record in conference games is now 733-501, a winning percentage of .594. In its 89 seasons of varsity baseball prior to 1999, OSU had 67 winning seasons; the Beavers finished at .500 in another 4 seasons. The Beavers have won 20 pennants through the years. Oregon State began fielding a varsity baseball team in 1907 and has failed to field a team only 3 times since then - in 1917 due to World War I and in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.
GOSS STADIUM AT COLEMAN FIELD: Oregon State baseball enters a new era this season with the opening of Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, adding one of the nation's newest stadiums to one of its oldest diamonds. Goss Stadium is set to be dedicated on April 17 when the Beavers play host to California.
Oregon State has been playing on the same site since starting varsity baseball in 1907, making Coleman Field the oldest diamond in the Pacific-10 and one of the oldest in the country. In 89 seasons at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, the Beavers are 847-352-1 all-time at home for a winning percentage of .706.
Oregon State went 20-4 at home in 1998, with its .833 home winning percentage giving the Beavers the top mark in the Pacific-10 Conference. Since the start of the 1993 season, OSU is 95-23 at Coleman Field for a winning percentage of .805.
Goss Stadium at Coleman Field was constructed over the winter. The structure seats approximately 1,500 people and includes a press box, concession/lobby area, dugouts, locker rooms, restrooms and storage areas. The outfield surface was rebuilt to match the top-quality infield; lights for night play are planned in the near future.
BEAVER STARTING PITCHERS: A large concern for Oregon State heading into 1999 was starting pitching as the Beavers turned over almost their entire starting rotation. Early indications are that OSU may again be able to rely on its starting pitching. OSU's top three starters - B.R. Cook, Mark Newell and Pat Versluis - have combined for a 5-4 record and 3.17 earned run average. Per start, they have averaged over 6.2 innings and 5.6 hits, 2.4 walks and 5.2 strikeouts.
PACIFIC-10'S NEW ALIGNMENT: Pacific-10 Conference baseball has a new look this season, as the Northern and Southern divisions have been eliminated in favor of a single nine-team league. Each team will play every other conference team in a single three-game series, with four series at home and four on the road. Sites of each series will be reversed the following year.
This is the second time the conference has attempted such a move. The first try was from 1967-69, when the Pacific-8 merged the Northern and Southern divisions.
BEAVERS FACE TOP-FLIGHT SCHEDULE: Again this spring, Oregon State will be tested by one of the nation's toughest schedules. The Beavers have four opponents ranked in the USA Today coaches poll of March 1: No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 13 Texas Tech and No. 17 Arizona. Other teams on OSU's schedule who received votes in the poll but did not make the top 25 are Oklahoma State, Washington, Southern California, UCLA, Minnesota and Washington State.
BEAVERS PICKED FOR EIGHTH IN PACIFIC-10: Oregon State was picked for eighth place in the Pacific-10 Conference preseason coaches poll. The results of the poll:
Team Pts. 1. Southern California 64 2. Stanford 55 3. Washington 38 4. Arizona State 37 (tie) UCLA 37 6. California 36 7. Arizona 34 8. Oregon State 12 9. Washington State 11
BEAVERS IN NATIONAL PUBLICATIONS, RANKINGS: Oregon State was picked to finish near the bottom of the Pacific-10 in the preseason predictions of several national publications.
Baseball America ranked Oregon State eighth in the Pacific-10, but ranked the Pacific-10 as the best conference in the country. BA ranked the Beavers 60th in its NCAA Division I top 100.
Collegiate Baseball didn't place OSU among the six Pac-10 teams it predicts to receive NCAA bids and the Beavers were not in CB's top 40. CB tabbed shortstop Troy Schader, outfielder Rob Colley and first baseman/designated hitter Joe Gerber among its Pac-10 players to watch.
The USA Today/National Association of Baseball Coaches preaseason poll didn't list OSU among its top 25, but the Beavers did receive a vote to tie for 49th place. OSU received votes in the Feb. 15 poll that were good for a 48th place tie.
1999 OREGON STATE PLAYER HONORS: Oregon State has had one selection as a Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball newspaper national Player of the Week and one as a Pacific-10 Pitcher of the Week this season. Pitcher B.R. Cook earned both honors for his one-hitter in a 1-0 win over 25th-ranked Oklahoma State on Feb. 18. OSU honors this year:
LOUISVILLE SLUGGER NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Feb. 15-21 B.R. Cook
PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Feb. 15-21 B.R. Cook
BEAVERS ON THE RADIO: For the fourth straight season, Oregon State baseball can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340). This weekend, both the Beavers' games against Gonzaga will be broadcast.
BEAVERS ON TELEVISION: Oregon State will have one game telecast live nationally on the Fox Sports Net cable network; that will be the Beavers' home game against California on April 17. That is also the date that has been set for the dedication of Goss Stadium.
Other OSU games will be televised on a tape-delay basis by Fox Sports Northwest; the network has yet to announce which games will be shown.
MIKE BOIRE, SENIOR PITCHER: Bullpen's leader ... on OSU career lists, first in saves (11) ... Notes, has pitched on back-to-back days 3 times this spring.
