OSU men get set for final weekend
November 10, 1998
FRIDAY, NOV. 13
Oregon State at Cal State-Sacramento, 3 p.m.
SUNDAY, NOV. 15
Oregon State at No. 3 UCLA, 1 p.m.
Oregon State (6-9-1 overall, 2-5-0 MPSF) concludes the season when it travels to face Cal State-Sacramento (0-14-2, 0-6-1) and third-ranked UCLA (15-2-0, 6-1-0). The week presents a pair of opportunities for the Beavers - first, what appears a good chance to pick up a result against a team that has yet to win this season; then a chance to go out with an upset of the defending national champ.
"We're looking forward to it," OSU head coach Jimmy Conway said. "It's the top and the bottom. It's an opportunity for the kids to get two results. It's a good week for us. We had a good training session on Friday and we'll have three this week - on moving the ball quickly, and getting our minds set on the game. We want to go into Sacramento flying."
The Beavers will be looking to end a 3-game losing streak that has seen them play well most of the time, yet come up short on the scoreboard. OSU was outshooting seventh-ranked Washington in a scoreless game until receiving a red card that led to a 6-0 loss; then the Beavers lost to 2-1 to Gonzaga and 3-2 to Portland on goals that scored in the final 90 seconds.
Cal State-Sacramento picked up its first result of the MPSF season on Sunday, tying 1-1 at Cal-Santa Barbara to end a 14-game losing streak. The Hornets' other tie this season was 0-0 against San Francisco State in their season-opener. Senior midfielder Kevin Mercado and sophomore forward Fabiano Rivero both have 7 points on 3 goals and 1 assist this season, while junior goalkeeper Ryan Duncan has a goals-against average of 2.39 and 1 shutout.
"Taking these one game at a time is very important," Conway said. "Cal State-Sacramento has been very close lately ... nothing is easy in this league."
UCLA is on a 5-game winning streak since a 2-1 loss to Cal State-Fullerton on Oct. 18. Senior midfielder Seth George has 36 points on 14 goals and 8 assists, leading a list of six UCLA players who have reached double-digits in points this fall. Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Rimando has a goals-against average of 0.49 and 7 shutouts this season.
It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: OSU leads the all-time series with Cal State-Sacramento 4-1-2 and the Beavers are on a 2-game winning streak and a 3-game unbeaten streak against the Hornets. Last season, the Beavers took a 1-0 win at Sacramento on Fredrik Kummernes' unassisted goal in the first half. CSU-Sacramento's win was a 1-0 victory in Corvallis in 1994.
OSU trails the all-time series with UCLA 0-3-0. The last meeting was in 1996, when UCLA took a 2-0 win in Los Angeles. Ouch, that's gotta hurt
INJURY REPORT: Junior goalkeeper Bryan Hill was hit in the knee and had to leave the game against Gonzaga on Nov. 1; he did not play Nov. 4 against Portland but is expected to play this weekend. Sophomore defender Jack Wheeler is out for the season after he broke his left leg in practice in late September. Sophomore defender Jake Fenner is out for the season with a case of mononucleosis. Beavers lose another in final minute of play
LAST WEEK: Oregon State played just once, falling 3-2 to Portland in a Nov. 4 game on Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium. The Beavers gave up the game-winning goal with just 58 seconds to play. Nick Jensen had tied the game off an assist by J.P. Capodanno in the 72nd minute; OSU had opened the contest with a 1-0 lead when Ben Roth scored off an assist by James Albert in the 27th minute.
Conway shows the way
OSU HEAD COACH JIMMY CONWAY: Jimmy Conway, the only head coach at OSU since soccer became a varsity sport in 1988, is in his 11th season with the Beavers. Conway has a record of 96-88-13 at Oregon State. He was Mountain Division Coach of the Year in 1995 and Northwest Colleges Soccer Conference Coach of the Year in 1990.
