Softball defeats Wichita State, No. 22 Minnesota
February 27, 1999
LAS CRUCES, NM - Tarrah Beyster homered in both games to help lift the OSU softball team to two wins in the second day of action at the Troy Cox Classic on Saturday.
Oregon State (14-3) posted a 6-2 win over Wichita State in the Beavers' first game of the day, before a 5-1 victory over No. 22 Minnesota in the nightcap.
"(Beating Minnesota) was definitely a good win, not only because they were preseason ranked, but also because they're a team that will finish fairly high in their regional standings," coach Kirk Walker said. "It's nice to see us coming together as a team. We're really working together to get the job done, regardless of whether its a starter or someone off the bench."
Beyster's two home runs were her only two official at-bats; she was walked in her four other plate appearances and finished the day with three RBI.
Jodi Chmielewski extended her hitting streak to 13 games after going 2-4 in both of Saturday's games. She doubled twice and scored two runs in the win over Wichita State.
Jenni Jodoin was 2-2 with a homer and three RBI in the win over the Shockers, and she also hit a double against Minnesota.
"It was a good team day. We got great support from players off the bench, and both pitchers controlled the opponents in the games," Walker said.
Beyster improved to 9-1 on the season after throwing a five-hitter with seven strikeouts against Minnesota. She did not walk a batter.
Crystal Draper earned the win against Wichita State to move to 5-2 on the year. She allowed just three hits and struck out 11 with no walks.
Oregon State, now 4-0 in the tournament, has advanced to Sunday's semifinal game at 9 a.m. The Beavers will play the winner of the Penn State/Utah quarterfinal from late Saturday evening.
