Oregon State (8-4 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10) returns home for the first time in over a month when the 16th-ranked Beavers meet Oregon (3-2, 2-1) in a Civil War dual at Gill Coliseum.
"It'll be great to be home," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "It's always a good dual meet, and it's good for the state. Most of the competition is in-state kids, so Mom and Dad and Grandpa and all the (high school) coaches and teams can come and watch their former athletes compete for one of the universities in the state."
It will be the annual Beaver Wrestling Homecoming, with all former OSU wrestlers encouraged to attend. At last year's event, 30 wrestling alums ranging from the Class of 1948 to the Class of 1997 were on hand; they represented 33 individual conference titles, 20 All-America finishes and seven individual NCAA titles. The alums saw the Beavers beat Oregon 29-13.
"There's no question that our tradition is a big part of our success," Wells said. "Our guys expect to do well. We've done well in wrestling for many, many years - they see that, and they see the involvement of the alums. Those guys come back and demonstrate an interest, they're interested in the guys on the team and want to know how they're doing.
"They've moved on and been successful, contributing members of the community. It brings that full circle. Our wrestlers recognize that these guys are really successful, and it does have an impact on them. They feel a responsibility to perform well."
Besides picking up a win over their in-state rivals, the Beavers will have some other goals.
"We want to fill up the seven minutes (of each match)," Wells said. "We want to go after them, be aggressive, make them work hard, push their conditioning, and - as always - look for improvement."
One improvement would be to get high-quality performances from the entire lineup in the same meet.
"We haven't seen everyone perform on a high level at the same time," Wells said. "Everybody has done it at various times through the season, and this would be a good opportunity for us all to perform at a high level and click on all cylinders."

Hwt.: Mat Orndorff, sr.; Kent, Wash. (Kent-Meridian HS); 17-3 record, 10 pins; No. 6 AWN, No. 5 InterMat ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Oregon State leads Oregon 89-21-4 in an all-time series that dates back to 1915. Oregon is on a one-meet win streak, having beaten OSU 22-15 in Eugene last Feburary; OSU's last win was 29-13 in Corvallis last January. OSU is 11-3-1 in the last 15 meetings.
INJURY REPORT: Oregon State will be missing one wrestler this weekend. Shane Cunanan, a freshman 141-pounder, dislocated his kneecap against Cal Poly and will be out several more weeks. Junior 165-pounder Isaac Wood is questionable with an elbow injury.
LAST WEEK: Oregon State placed fourth in the 16-team Virginia Duals tournament, held January 8-9 at Hampton, Va. The 16th-ranked Beavers fell to 21st-ranked Cornell 20-12 in the third-place final Saturday night; earlier in the day, they had lost to 11th-ranked Michigan 23-18 in the championship semifinals and then beaten 20th-ranked Rider 25-15 in the consolation semifinals. OSU had opened the tournament Friday with a 23-13 win over Boise State.
Top-ranked 149-pounder Oscar Wood was 4-0 with 2 pins and a major decision; he also beat ninth-ranked Shawn Bradley of Cornell 6-3. Beaver heavyweight Mat Orndorff upped his winning streak to 10 by going 3-0 at the tournament. He recorded 1 pin and 1 technical fall. Beavers going 3-1 in the tournament were 133-pounder Ben Richards and 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen.
"We were pleased to place and be in the final round of wrestling," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "We were doing some good things but not enough. We take a lot of shots, but it's not a good selection sometimes. We don't have a high percentage of finishing, so we definitely need to work on that. We're being aggressive but not capitalizing. We've seen some progress. In some cases, we're not creating enough opportunity to score; in other cases, we're being a little too aggressive and being a little foolish. I hope we learned a few lessons from this competition."
NEW RULES FOR ORDER OF MEETS IN 1998-99: College wrestling fans will notice a number of changes in the sport as the 1998-99 season begins.
First, the nine lightest weight classifications have been changed. Seven pounds were added to each of the classifications used last season. The lightest weight went from 118 pounds to 125 pounds; 126 pounds moved to 133 pounds, and so on up through the lineup.
The second change involves the order of matches in a dual meet. Previously, the lightest wrestlers started the meet, then the weights went in ascending order up through the heavyweight finale. Now, the order of matches will be determined by a blind draw.
The new rule states that wrestlers must weigh in one hour before the start of a dual meet. Sometime between the weigh-in and the start of the meet, a drawing will be held to determine the first weight classification to wrestle. The meet will then progress in the regular order starting with that weight. For example, if the first weight is 157 pounds, the order for that meet would be 157, 165, 174, 184, 197, HWT, 125, 133, 141 and 149.
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells is in his seventh season as Oregon State's head coach. Wells, who had been an assistant at Iowa and Michigan for 17 seasons, owns a 74-42-1 career dual meet record at OSU.
The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times in Wells' six years, tying for ninth place in 1998 and placing eighth in 1996, second in 1995 and fourth in 1994.
Under Wells, OSU has had two national champions, 14 All-Americans and 14 conference champions.
Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.
Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a two-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 United States Wrestling Federation freestyle champion.
OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into this season. Currently, OSU has an all-time dual meet record of 809-239-13 and a .769 winning percentage.
OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: As always, Oregon State will face one of the nation's most demanding schedules. The Beavers will wrestle duals against 10 teams ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll of January 7: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Minnesota, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Nebraska, No. 15 Cal State-Bakersfield, No. 20 Rider, No. 21 Cornell and No. 23 Brigham Young.
