OSU swimmers end regular season
February 10, 1999
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13
Oregon State, Pacific, San Diego State at Nevada; noon
Oregon State (1-5 overall duals, 0-3 Pacific-10) wraps up its regular-season schedule with a four-way meet, as the Beavers travel to take on 13th-ranked Nevada (5-1), San Diego State (4-7) and Pacific (5-10).
"This is the final tuneup - this is it," OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. "On Thursday, we're two weeks out (from the Pacific-10 Championships). There's not a lot of work we can do now; mainly rest and do the final touchups here."
For the Beavers, an area of concentration this week will be ... concentration. Oregon State needs to sharpen its mental approach to racing before heading for the conference meet.
"That's very big for us, especially with how young this team is," said Podkoscielny, who has a squad with no seniors and one junior. "Half of our team has never competed at the Pacific-10 level."
The Beavers are coming off two dual meet losses to Washington State, but those meets ended a two-month layoff from racing.
"We had a good showing this past weekend," Podkoscielny said. "Now we hope to carry that momentum through to Reno and on to the Pac-10s."
INJURY REPORT: Oregon State team captain Erica Stephens, a sophomore, is out this week and could be out for the season with a shoulder injury. She may be able to return to swim in relays at the Pacific-10 Championships.
LAST WEEK: Oregon State had its only home meets of the season and lost twice to Washington State, 158-104 on Feb. 5 and 122-83 on Feb. 6.
OSU's Arianna Higuera and Melissa Hsieh won two events each and the Beavers made six entries on the school's all-time leader lists on Feb. 5. Higuera won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.49 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 52.61 seconds, while Hsieh took the 100 butterfly in 59.32 seconds and the 200 butterfly in 2:10.31.
Bonnie Renwick broke into two of the school's all-time top 10 lists for best times in each event. Renwick jumped into eighth place on the 100 freestyle list with her mark of 53.44 seconds, and moved into a 10th-place tie in the 50 freestyle with her time of 24.79 seconds. Sarah Cohen went from ninth place to fifth place on the 200 individual medley list with her mark of 2:12.04, and she improved her sixth-place time on the 200 breaststroke list to 2:26.14. Hsieh earned her third victory of the weekend by winning the 200 butterfly in 2:11.04 and Imwalle won the 1,000 freestyle by a wide margin in 10:47.72. OSU's 400 freestyle relay team of Bonnie Renwick, Hsieh, Suzanne Broda and Arianna Higuera capped the meet by winning in 3:35.74.
HEAD COACH MARIUSZ PODKOSCIELNY: Mariusz Podkoscielny is in his third season as head coach at Oregon State; he has a dual meet record of 6-20 overall, 0-10 in the Pacific-10. Podkoscielny, 30, is a nine-time All-American and two-time Olympian.
Prior to coming to OSU in the fall of 1996, Podkoscielny had served as an assistant men's and women's coach at Arizona, his alma mater, since 1993.

Stephens won three events (400 IM, 100 back, 200 back) agianst San Jose State, two events (200 IM, 200 back) against Utah and one event (400 IM) at the Speedo Cup before suffering a shoulder injury.

BEAVER SOPHOMORES: Oregon State is hoping for a repeat performance from its sophomore class. The swimmers in their second year at OSU are well on their way to being the Beavers' fastest class ever in the sport.
The nine returning sophomores (Erin Buckley, Kristal Castillo, Sarah Cohen, Arianna Higuera, Melissa Hsieh, Julie Lewis, Jennifer Saunders, Kristen Severance and Erica Stephens) on OSU's roster have already combined for one school record and 26 entries on the school's all-time top 10 lists in various events.
Stephens set the school record in the 400-yard individual medley against Washington on Nov. 22, 1997 in 4:34.27, then lowered it to 4:28.16 in the Pacific-10 Championships on Feb. 27, 1998.
BEAVER NEWCOMERS: Oregon State's first-year swimmers are making an immediate impact. The eight freshmen (Suzanne Broda, Danielle Lux, Kristin Martinec, Maureen Pendergast, Jill Personius, Bonnie Renwick, Dana Stoddard and Sheila Tehranchi) and two transfers (Kyla Bond and Amy Imwalle) have combined for one school record and 19 marks on the school's all-time top 10 lists of swimmers in each event.
