Beavers top Portland 10-3 in baseball
April 6, 1999
PORTLAND, Ore. - Joe Gerber homered and drove in five runs Tuesday afternoon as Oregon State beat Portland 10-3 in non-league baseball at Pilot Stadium. The Beavers (12-21 overall, 1-5 Pacific-10) won for the second time in their last three games and snapped a three-game winning streak for Portland (10-18, 5-7 West Coast).
The wins give OSU some momentum going into a Pacific-10 series against Arizona that starts Friday night in Tucson.
"We kept some things going," said OSU head coach Pat Casey after watching the Beavers continue their recent surge at the plate. "We needed to come up here and play with intensity. We got a little flat when we got up 10 runs, but we did what we needed to. Now, weve got to go to a tough place to play and play a very good club."
Gerber drove a three-run homer to right field in the third inning to put Oregon State up 4-0. It was Gerbers 18th career homer, giving him sole possession of ninth place on the Beaver career list, and it also gave Gerber the team lead this season with six homers.
Gerber also had a two-run single in OSUs five-run fourth inning. In Oregon States last six games, Gerber has 11 hits and 14 runs batted in.
Another Beaver made an entry books in the fourth inning. Troy Schader doubled to drive in a run, the 102nd, RBI of his career, tying him for 10th place on OSUs all-time list.
Oregon State added its final run when Drew Hedges led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo homer to right; it was the third homer of the year for Hedges and his second in three games.
OSU pitchers Don Stykel and Hal Ranstad kept Portland scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Steve Jackson led off with a double against Ranstad and eventually scored on Cory Lundes groundout. Portland picked up its final two runs on Jeff Trevarthens homer to left off Beaver reliever Travis Rainwater.
Stykel got his first collegiate win, going four innings and allowing four hits and no walks while tying his career-high with five strikeouts. Hedges was 3-for-4 for the Beavers, Gerber and Tim Dryden were 2-for-4 and Rob Colley was 2-for-5.
