Softball Splits with No. 2 Arizona
March 27, 1999
TUCSON, Ariz. - Kelli Kranz hit a two-run homer to help lead the No. 12 Oregon State softball team to a 4-0 win over No. 2 Arizona in the opening game of a doubleheader before the Wildcats came back to defeat OSU, 3-2, in the nightcap.
Kim Herman scored two of OSU's four runs in the win, including the team's first run of the game in the second. She also scored when Kranz homered two innings later.
Jodi Chmielewski added two hits in the win, while Shawna Feldt was 1-3 with a double and a run scored.
Tarrah Beyster pitched a four-hitter with three strikeouts for the win, while Becky Lemke took the loss for the Wildcats.
Oregon State (27-10, 2-2 Pac-10) let a 2-1 lead slip away in the second game after allowing Arizona (30-4, 3-1) to score twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Wildcats scored a run in the third to take the early 1-0 lead, but Beyster tied the game with a solo home run in the sixth and then OSU took the lead when Feldt singled to score Michelle Chariton in the seventh.
But then Chrissy Gil tied it up again with a home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and Beyster came in to pitch for Crystal Draper. Erika Hanson flew out to left field for the first out, but Toni Mascarenas then reached base on an error by Feldt. Katie Swan put down a sacrifice bunt to send Mascarenas to second, and Felecity Willis singled to drive in the game-winning run.
Beyster's record now stands at 16-7 after going 1-1 against the Wildcats. Jennie Finch improved to 14-1 after the win in the second game.
