OSU swimmers win one, lose two

RENO, Nev. - Oregon State won one dual meet and lost two Saturday in a four-way women's swimming meet, beating Pacific (Calif.) 72-50 and falling to 13th-ranked Nevada 111-27 and San Diego State 69-63. The Beavers (2-7 overall, 0-3 Pacific-10) outscored San Diego State in the swimming portion of the competition but lost the meet because OSU has no diving team.
"Overall, it was a good experience for us, a good meet," OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. "We had a lot of areas where we struggled, but we also had a lot of areas where we did very well. The late travel (OSU was delayed in Portland) on Friday night got to us a little; combined with the high altitude, it hurt some of our performances today."
Sarah Cohen was a four-time winner on Saturday, taking the 200-yard breaststroke and 400 individiual medley against both Pacific and San Diego State. Arianna Higuera was a three-time winner, taking the 50 freestyle against Pacific and San Diego State and the 100 freestyle against San Diego State.
Melissa Hsieh captured the 100 and 200 butterfly races against Pacific and Dana Stoddard won the 1,000 freestyle against Pacific.
Podkoscielny said the Beavers were disappointed in losing the meet to San Diego State even though they outswam the Aztecs.
"It hurts to see the girls put their heart and soul into races and lose the meet, not because they're slower in the water but because someone else had divers," Podkoscielny said. "It's like having a football team with no kicker - you can't kick points after or field goals. I think that's the third dual we've lost this year due to a lack of divers ... we just have to do a better job of swimming next year and make up for it."
The Beavers now focus on the Pacific-10 Championships that will be held Feb. 25-27 at Federal Way, Wash.
"We're very excited about Pac-10s," Podkoscielny said. "The girls have done the work and they're ready to go. We're looking forward to a lot of good performances in two weeks."
