STREAKS: Oregon State is on a four-game losing streak overall. The Beavers have a seven-game non-conference winning streak, a three-game losing streak at Parker Stadium; a four-game Pacific-10 Conference losing streak and a one-game road losing streak. Oregon State's seven-game non-conference winning streak is the longest since winning seven straight from the 1937 season through the 1941 campaign. The Beavers will be seeking the fifth win of the season against Oregon, and the last time OSU had five wins in a season was in 1971.
INJURY UPDATE: OUT--Cornerback Sam Gage (dislocated left elbow). PROBABLE--Strong safety Armon Hatcher (ankle sprain); wide receiver Roddy Tompkins (bruised knee) and free safety Bo Marthaller (knee).
OSU-OREGON SERIES: The 1998 Civil War game will mark the 102nd game in the longest rivalry on the West Coast, in terms of games played. The first Oregon State-Oregon game was played in 1894, while California and Stanford first met in 1892. The Ducks currently lead the series 51-40-10, including a current winning streak of four games. The Beavers last victory was 15-12 at Autzen Stadium in 1993. The last OSU victory at Parker Stadium was 21-10 in 1988. Since then, Oregon has won four straight at Parker Stadium.
MIKE RILEY: Mike Riley (Alabama, '75) is in his second year as the Beavers' head coach and his second year as a collegiate head coach. Riley has a collegiate career record of 7-14 (.333). Since becoming head coach at Oregon State, Riley has not lost a non-conference game, going 6-0 in two years. With seven victories under his belt so far in his OSU head coaching career, Riley is the first Beaver head coach to record seven victories since Dee Andros in 1965 and 1966. Riley was not a rookie head coach when he accepted the OSU position in 1996 for the '77 season. Riley had six previous seasons under his belt as a professional football head coach, four at Winnipeg in the Canadian Football League and two at San Antonio of the World League of American Football. As head coach of Winnipeg, he won two Grey Cup championships. Overall, he had a combined record of 51-41-0 as a professional head coach. Riley spent four years as offensive coordinator at USC prior to becoming head coach at OSU. Riley is 0-1 vs. Oregon as the Beavers' head coach.
MIKE BELLOTTI: Oregon's Mike Bellotti is in his fourth season as the Ducks' head coach and he is 3-0 vs. Oregon State. Bellotti is currently 30-15 as Oregon's head coach. Bellotti is in his ninth season as a collegiate head coach and has posted an overall record of 53-40-2 heading into this week's game with Arizona State.

OSU-OREGON LAST YEAR: Oregon scored a 48-30 victory over Oregon State at Autzen Stadium last year. The Ducks led 27-10 at the end of the first half. The game featured several big plays on both sides. Oregon's Pat Johnson was the big star of the game as he caught a 36-yard TD pass from Akili Smith, a 45-yard TD strike from Jason Maas, a 90-yard touchdown pass from Maas and he returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown. Jason Dandridge started his first career game at tailback for the Beavers and responded with a 104-yard rushing afternoon, including touchdown runs of 35 and 12 yards. The Ducks held a 444-349 edge in total offense. Tim Alexander passed for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns for OSU and rushed for 34 yards on 10 carries. Maas passed for 162 yards and Smith 137 to lead Oregon. Saladin McCullough rushed for 156 yards to lead the Ducks' ground attack.
NOTES FROM UCLA GAME: For the third straight week, Oregon State suffered a gut-wrenching defeat. The Beavers rallied to tie the No. 3 ranked Bruins 34-34 with 31 seconds to play, only to lose it on a 61-yard UCLA touchdown pass, 41-34. However, once again, the Beavers had a lot of statistical highlights in the game.
IT HAS BEEN A RECORD SETTING SEASON: The 1998 season has proved to be a record-setting year in a lot of areas for Oregon State. To date, the following records have been broken or tied with one game remaining in the season for the Beavers:
INDIVIDUAL:
TEAM:
OSU FIFTH NATIONALLY IN SECONDARY THEFTS: Oregon State picked off one pass vs. UCLA, giving the Beavers 16 for the season, which is second in the Pac-10 and tied for fifth nationally. USC leads the Pac-10 and the nation with 18, along with Wisconsin, Auburn and Indiana. The Beavers' latest interceptions came from Armon Hatcher, who had one against the Bruins, giving him three interceptions in his last two games. Nine different OSU defensive players have picked off passes so far this season. Five of the picks have been by linebackers--Bryan Jones, James Allen, Brandon Boice, Brian Rogers and Darnell Robinson--and 10 have been by the secondary--Armon Hatcher has 5, Andrae Holland has 3, Ricky Walker has 2 Aaron Wright has one. The national team leaders:
USC..........18 Oregon State............16 Ohio State........15 Florida State....15 Wisconsin....18 North Carolina State....16 Northeast La. ....15 Utah.............15 Auburn.......18 Virginia Tech...........16 Wake Forest.......15 Indiana......18 Michigan................16 Georgia...........15
BEAVERS DROP IN PAC-10 SACK RACE: After being limited to one sack in the UCLA game, Oregon State has fallen to fifth in the Pac-10 team sack race after leading all teams the first seven weeks of the season. OSU has 30 sacks on the season, trailing California and USC (31 each), Arizona (35) and Washington (48). Jamil Braithwaite got OSU's lone sack vs. UCLA. Braithwaite is seventh in the Pac-10 among sack leaders with 6.5, while Inoke Breckterfield is tied for eighth among individual leaders in the Pac-10 with 6 sacks.
TURNOVERS TELL THE TALE: One statistic, turnovers, has told the tale for Oregon State as far as winning or losing most of the time in 1998. The Washington game has proved to be the lone exception this year. Prior to the Husky game, the Beavers were 4-3 on the season and had won each time they had been on the positive side in turnovers. OSU came out of the Washington game with a plus one in turnovers and lost. The Beavers have lost all five times this year when they have been on the negative side in turnovers, including their last outing with UCLA when the Bears held a plus two advantage. For the season, Oregon State is a minus four in turnovers and ranks sixth in the Pac-10 and is 74th nationally.
QUOTING MIKE RILEY
ON OREGON: "Oregon is a very good overall football team. I think they have one of the quickest, striking offenses that I have seen so far on film. They make a big plays down the field pretty consistently, and that is a great weapon for them. They can score quickly. Their defense is much improved from a year ago. I think they are sound and well coached. They really hustle on defense. They have good overall special teams including a great punter in Bidwell (Josh)."
ON CIVIL WAR RIVALRY: "It is a big game for our program. It is one of those rivalries that I think is very special. Anytime you are playing in a game like this it has significance importance to the team, and to the building of this program. Oregon has a team that has been very consistent in recent years and we are on our way to being a team like that, and to do that, we have to beat our in-state rival."
ON OSU SENIOR CLASS: "This is a terrific group of kids. I have really enjoyed coaching them. They are not only good football players, but they are quality people. Even though they might not have had much success in their early years at Oregon State they remained committed to being good football players and having a good team. I think they have helped to form a start here at Oregon State that is very special. I would have to think this one of the best football teams to have been at Oregon State in quite a while."
ON BYE WEEK: "It was a good time to have a bye. There were a couple of times in that four-week road swing that we had early in the season that it would have been nice to have a bye. But when the bye week finally arrived I felt great about it, I thought it was good for our kids, both physically and mentally. I think a bye at this time of year for us appeared to be very good in order to get some kids back."
