Softball Wins Two More
FRESNO, Calif. - Jodi Chmielewski was 4-for-6 with a triple, two runs, and two RBI as she helped lift the No. 20 ranked Oregon State softball team (14-3) to two more victories at the Fresno State Classic Saturday.
Oregon State opened the day with a 7-1 win over Notre Dame (4-9) before handing Western Illinois (1-7) a 3-1 loss in the afternoon. The Beavers collected 22 hits on the afternoon, with 11 in each game. Chmielewski's four hits led the Beavers, while Kelli Kranz, Parisa Plant, Tarrah Beyster and Jenni Jodoin each came up with three hits apiece.
"It was great to see the team hit the ball again," said head coach Kirk Walker. "We scored a lot of runs and hit very well."
The Beavers jumped ahead early against Notre Dame, scoring two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Oregon State added two more in the third, and Kranz sent three Beavers home in the fourth with her first double of the season. Notre Dame scored its only run of the game in the fifth.
Brooke Hofstetter (4-2) pitched the complete game for the Beavers. She scattered six hits throughout the game and allowed just one run, which was unearned.
"Brooke pitched a nice ballgame," Walker said. "Our defense played very strong again."
In the game against the Westerwinds, Oregon State stranded 13 runners - including seven in the first three innings -- and left the bases loaded twice. Western Illinois got on the board in the third inning to force the Beavers to come from behind for the victory.
Heather Chinn and Brooke Rutschman both came up with singles in the sixth, and then Chmielewski hit the team's first triple of the season to put the Beavers ahead. OSU added another run in the seventh.
Beyster (10-1) went the distance for OSU on the mound. She struck out six Western Illinois batters and walked just one while allowing six hits.
"Tarrah was a little off at the start, but she raised the level of her game in the last four innings," Walker said. "Overall, it was a good victory to pull out with clutch hitting from Jodi (Chmielewski)."
