Beavers to Row for 13th at NCAA Championships
May 28, 1999
CORDOVA, Calif. -- The No. 12 Oregon State University women's crew team finished sixth in heat two in the opening day of the NCAA Championships on Lake Natoma.
The Beavers rowed a time of 7:12.20 in the 2,000-meter course, less than two seconds behind fourth-place Boston University.
"We had a poor start that got us off rhythm," OSU Head Coach Charlie Owen said. "We were scrambling the whole race and then we just slowed the stroke rate down to conserve energy for the afternoon race."
The team rowed in the afternoon's repechages, and finished fifth. The team will now row Saturday for place 13th-19th.
"We got a little unlucky by rowing in the outside lane," Owen said. "They moved the boat much faster than in the early race, but the crosswind hampered them."
Women's Eight Heat 2 - Princeton, 6:54.40; Michigan, 6:55.20; Harvard, 7:01.20; Boston U., 7:10.86; Michigan State, 7:11.87; Oregon State, 7:12.20
