OSU women move unbeaten streak to four
October 2, 1998
PULLMAN, Wash. - Jona Maukonens goal in the second half gave Oregon State a 1-1 tie with Montana in a non-league womens soccer game played Friday afternoon in Pullman, Wash. OSU (5-4-1 overall) will take a four-game unbeaten string into its Pacific-10 Conference opener next Friday at Oregon.
"It was a flyer of a game," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "Its one of those where we road our luck a bit, but on the other hand we felt unlucky."
The Beavers were outshot 31-8, yet still might have won if the Grizzlies (6-3-1) hadnt been awarded a penalty kick in the first half. The result was a marked difference from the two teams meeting a year ago, when Montana thumped Oregon State 10-0 in a game at UM.
On Friday, OSU drew even when the Beavers senior co-captains teamed up for a goal in the 56th minute. Jona Maukonen took the ball in the midfield and passed to Lindy Brown, who quickly returned it to Maukonen; she advanced and drilled the ball into the lower left corner of the net from six yards out to make it 1-1.
Montana had gone in front 1-0 on Margo Tufts penalty kick in the 31st minute; the penalty kick was awarded after Montanas Karen Hardy and OSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease tussled going after a loose ball.
"They pushed the ball through and Elizabeth got it, and the other girl fell over her," Fennah said. "The ball broke loose, Elizabeth was on it, and the other girl fell on her again ... we felt unlucky to give that away."
Tufts beat Pease inside the right post for the score, ending Peases string of scoreless minutes at 388. That was all Pease would allow, though, as she finished with 16 saves.
"Elizabeth played an outstanding game," Fennah said. "She had a number of great saves."
After a quick Montana team applied pressure to start the game, the Beavers managed to find some playing rhythm. Just before the penalty kick was awarded, the Grizzlies were struggling to break down OSUs defense and began turning over the ball and OSU was earning some scoring chances.
Following the games goals, both teams had chances to score. Montanas Jodi Campbell hit the crossbar three times in the match, and in overtime OSUs Brown had a shot from just outside the box that forced a tough save by UM goalkeeper Amy Beals.
Browns assist continued her climb on OSUs career leaders lists. She now has 14 career assists, moving her into a tie for fifth on the schools all-time list.
