OSU loses baseball game, Gerber his streak
May 8, 1999
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Back spasms helped end Joe Gerbers hitting streak at 21 games Saturday afternoon as Oregon State fell to UCLA 15-0 in Pacific-10 baseball at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Gerber was 0-for-2 before leaving the game with back spasms in the bottom of the sixth inning; hes questionable for Sundays 1 p.m. series finale between the Beavers (17-44 overall, 4-16 Pacific-10) and Bruins (27-27, 11-9).
Gerber struck out, walked and fouled out to third base in his three plate appearances. The Beaver first baseman had made a twisting catch near the fence in foul territory down the right-field line in the bottom of the fifth inning that set off the back spasms; he aggravated the problem during his final at-bat.
Gerber took the field for the bottom of the sixth but was replaced by Curtis Davis during the second hitter of the inning, ending Gerbers streak at 21 games. During the streak, which began March 28 at Minnesota, Gerber batted .494 with nine doubles, nine homers, 38 runs batted in, 27 runs scored, 13 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games.
OSU third baseman Josh Carter also saw his eight-game hitting streak end. That streak was his second eight-gamer of the season.
The Beavers could manage only four hits against UCLAs Josh Karp and Tyler Dersom in the game. Karp, who turned down a $2 million offer from the Atlanta Braves after being taken in the eighth round of the 1998 draft, got the win by going seven innings and allowing just three hits and three walks, striking out seven.
B.R. Cook took the loss with his second straight rough start for the Beavers. Cook lasted four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out three.
UCLA opened its scoring with a leadoff homer from Jack Santora in the first inning, then added a pair of runs in the second. The Bruins broke the game open in the fourth innings, scoring four times on five hits, and added two more runs in the sixth inning before tacking on six runs in the eighth.
