April 20, 1999
Corvallis, Ore. - SCHEDULE: The Oregon State University mens and womens crew team return to action April 24-25 at the Stanford Invitational. The action is held at Redwood Shores near the Stanford University campus. The men will race Saturday only, competing in dual meets against Stanford and UC Davis. The women will be competing Saturday in dual meets versus Stanford and USC, and Sunday against Michigan State.
RACE SCHEDULE: The following is the schedule for the races at Redwood Shores: Saturday
9-10 a.m. -- OSU vs. Stanford (Men and Women) 3:30-3:50 p.m. -- OSU vs. USC (Women only) 5-5:20 p.m. -- OSU vs. UC Davis (Men only) Sunday 10:10-10:30 a.m. -- OSU vs. Michigan State (Women only)NATIONAL RANKINGS: Both the Oregon State mens and womens varsity eights are ranked in the USRowing National Collegiate Rowing Coaches Poll. The men are No. 17 and women are No. 12. Stanford is ranked No. 20 for men, the USC women are No. 5 and the Michigan State women are No. 16.
REISCHMAN ON THE INVITATIONAL: The following are comments from mens head coach Dave Reischman: "We had a couple of good weeks of practice and we are eager to get back on the race course. I see our biggest improvement over the past two weeks as our handling of race pressure. We are doing a much better job of staying in our rhythm and moving the boat effectively in pressure situations."
OWEN ON THE INVITATIONAL: The following are comments from womens head coach Charlie Owen: "This event is unique, in that we are racing two other crews in addition to Stanford. We havent rowed USC in a long period of time and we have never competed against Michigan State. The meet against Michigan State is a very important one for us -- it is ranked in the top 20 and we need to beat them to help us when it comes time for the NCAA team selections. Conditioning shouldnt be a factor, but Im sure we will be tired by the end of Sunday. You have to race a similar schedule at the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships, so this is a good experience for our crew. Im looking to improve our race consistency this week, we havent rowed as well as we would like."
THE COURSE: The Redwood Shores course is 1,950 meters, 50 meters short of the usual course length. It is considered one of the best dual meet sites in the nation.
LAST EVENT: April 10 marked the last event for the men and womens crews. The men raced Western Washington at Vancouver Lake, capturing titles in the mens eight and freshman eight, while the second varsity eight featured races between two OSU crews. The women finished second to No. 4 California in the varsity eight and second varsity eight, and won the novice race.
