February 1, 1999
John Lepak, Eric Dahm and Todd Deacon each shot 1-over-par rounds of 72 to lead the Oregon State men's golf team into a tie for eighth place after one round of the 54-hole Ping Arizona Intercollegiate. This tournament signifies the beginning of the spring golf season.
As a team, Oregon State shot 7-over-par 291 over The Raven Course. The Beavers are tied with USC and the host Arizona Wildcats.
"We played real solid today," Beaver Head Coach Mike Ketcham said. "We are in the position I thought we might be after the first round."
Lepak bogeyed five of the first seven holes, before rebounding for the 72. Deacon is playing in his first college tournament ever.
"I'm especially pleased with the performance of Todd Deacon," Ketcham added. "He handled himself like a veteran of many tournaments today."
The rest of the Oregon State scores include Kyle Hudson with a 75 and Ryan Nomura with a 78. Nomura is also playing in his first collegiate event.
The University of Washington and the University of Houston share the team lead at even-par 284. Derek Gillespie of Arizona, Mike Lawrence of UC Irvine and Jason Semelsberger of UCLA share the individual lead at 66.
The tournament was scheduled for 36 holes Monday, but darkness suspended play. Oregon State players had three holes remaining in their second round, which will be concluded Tuesday.
