OSU falls in baseball, 14-9
February 20, 1999
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Oregon State pitchers gave up 13 walks and 13 hits Friday afternoon as the Beavers fell to No. 20 Texas Tech 14-9 in the San Diego Classic baseball tournament at San Diego States Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Beavers (6-4 overall) will play at San Diego on Saturday at 1 p.m., then finish the tournament against Loyola Marymount on Sunday at 10 a.m. at SDSU.
On Friday, the Beavers bats finally came alive but the pitching struggled one day after B.R. Cook had tossed a one-hitter in Oregon States 1-0 win over No. 24 Oklahoma State. OSU had 15 hits against the Raiders (8-4) but couldnt hold an early lead.
The Beavers led 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but Tech tagged OSU starter Pat Versluis and reliever Rob Greenwald for four runs on three hits and three walks to jump in front 4-3. Oregon State came right back with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead as Troy Schaders groundout, Josh Carters sacrifice fly and Brian Duerrs single all drove in runs.
Texas Tech took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, though, with six runs on just three hits and three more Beaver walks against Greenwald and Jed Mitchell. The key hit was Jon Webers bases-loaded triple to right-center; he scored on Josh Bards sacrifice fly to make it 10-6.
The Beavers had a chance to jump back in the game immediately, loading the bases with none out in the top of the sixth, but couldnt push a run across. Oregon State got back within 10-8 on Joe Gerbers two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh, only to see Texas Tech pick up a run in the bottom of the seventh and three more in the bottom of the eight.
Gerber was 3-for-5 and drove in three runs for Oregon State, while K.C. Rumrey was also 3-for-5, Rodd Gott was 2-for-4 and Tim Dryden was 2-for-5 with a double and drove in two runs.
