December 17, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Jason Heide, making his first start of the season, scored a career-high 20 points and Ramunas Petraitis added a career-high 17 as Oregon State beat Chicago State 87-56 Thursday in a non-league game.
The Beavers (4-1) also got six points, eight rebounds and eight assists from Deaundra Tanner as they posted their widest margin of victory this season.
Chicago State (1-6) was led by Jason Daniel's 18 points while Jermaine Hicks had 16.
OSU led just 41-34 at halftime, then started the second half with a 25-3 run that included five points by Petraitis and four by Iyan Walker, plus six turnovers by Chicago State.
The Cougars missed their first nine shots of the second half, held without a field goal until Jason Strojine's 3-pointer made it 66-40 with 9:17 left in the game.
"I thought our overall energy and our focus was better," OSU head coach Eddie Payne said. "And that was reflected in that 11 minutes in the second half when they didn't get a field goal. We did a much better job in the second half contesting shots."
Chicago State hit just eight of 26 shots from the field in the second half.
