Women's Golf Finishes Third at Northwest Invitational
October 13, 1998
Corvallis, Ore. - Tamie Durdin of Pepperdine made par on the first playoff hole of sudden death to capture the individual title of the Northwest Invitational at the Trysting Tree Golf Club. The true-freshman for the Waves fired a final round 3-under-par 69, matching the low score for the tournament. She finished regulation in a tie with first (co-leader) and second round leader Kelli Kamimura of Washington.
"Im really excited to win my first tournament," Durdin, who was playing in only her third collegiate event ever, said. "I holed some good putts today, and that was the key to my round."
The No. 25 University of Washington Huskies captured the team title with a final round of 299, the best score for the day. The Huskies finished the 54-hole tournament with a 35-over-par 899 total. Pepperdine was one shot back and No. 20 Oregon State finished five shots back. The Beavers led the tournament after two rounds, but shot 307 the final day.
"We had some players play well today, but we needed one more good score," OSU Head Coach Rise Lakowske said. "When you are playing in a field like this, you cant afford to have a high score. Overall, there were a lot of positives and things we can build on the rest of the fall season."
Senior Anjeanette Dabbs led the Beavers, finishing third at 1-over-par 217. Dabbs 217 sets a new school record for 54 holes, bettering teammate Kathleen Takaishis old mark by three shots.
Oregon State also received a solid performance from Andrea Hehn, who tied for fifth at 223. Hehn shot the OSU low round for the day with a 73. Unfortunately, Hehn was playing as an individual and did not count toward the team score.
"The good thing from this tournament is we shot 904, and that is a very solid score," Lakowske said. "Anjeanette gained a lot of confidence from her play in this event, and I was pleased with the performances from Andrea, and Rachel and Erin Borcherts."
Rachel Borcherts finished tied for 14th at 229, carding a 74 in the final round. Other Oregon State scores include Kathleen Takaishi tied for ninth at 227; Erin Borcherts tied for 21st at 231; Anne Brooksby and Jennifer Ferrante tied for 52nd at 246; Brandi Seymour tied for 56th at 247; and Reena Eklund was 66th at 254.
Oregon State continues its fall season Oct. 23-25 at the Stanford Intercollegiate.
