OSU women post second straight shutout
September 27, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State won its second straight game in womens soccer Sunday afternoon, beating Idaho State 1-0 in a non-league contest on Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium. Beaver freshman BreeAnna Jolin scored the games only goal in the 72nd minute and OSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease recorded her second consecutive shutout. Oregon State (4-4-0 overall) won back-to-back games for the first time since it had a three-game winning streak in late September, 1996. The consecutive shutouts by goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease were the Beavers first since blanking Arkansas and California in mid-October, 1995.
"Our target was to get two wins for the weekend, and we got two," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "Thats key ... our composure was good at times; at others, we gave the ball away too easily. But we wanted to come away with two wins and we did. That should give us confidence as we go on the road again."
The Beavers play at Idaho on Wednesday, and then against Montana in Pullman, Wash., on Friday.
Idaho State (1-6-1), a first-year program, held the Beavers scoreless until midway through the second half. But the Beavers dominated play after intermission, keeping the ball in ISUs end of the field and outshooting the Bengals 12-1 in the second half.
Finally, in the 72nd minute, OSUs Sunny Miller crossed the ball left to Jolin directly in front of the net and her point-blank shot beat Bengal goalkeeper Chrissy Nelson to the near post.
Jolin was just one of several Beaver freshmen to contribute to the weekends wins.
"That was her first collegiate goal, and that was great for her," Fennah said of Jolin. "A goal is what a striker is working for, and that should give her some confidence. Rebecca Remmel also did well giving us energy, the same as she had yesterday ... Brianne Mosbauer also played well. She played the ball to feet, and thats what were looking for."
Fennah also praised the play of sophomore Allison Hamada.
"She did a nice job of settling things in back for us," Fennah said. "She played with a lot of composure."
