Beavers Finish Competition at San Diego Crew Classic
SAN DIEGO, Cal. - The Oregon State women's varsity eight crew finished sixth and the men's varsity eight crew finished ninth overall at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay. The regatta is one of the premier events in the nation for collegiate rowing.
The women's varsity eight boat rowed a 6:44.4 in the Whittier Cup Grand Finals. The team was situated in the outside lane and forced to row against a strong cross wind.
"It's never easy when you are on the outside lane in any race," OSU Women's Head Coach Charlie Owen said. "Overall, I thought the crew did a nice job today against an extremely strong field, and against the wind."
The men's varsity eight finished third in the Petite Finals of the Copley Cup race, posting a time of 6:01. The team had some on course problems 200 meters into the 2,000-meter race, which forced them to fall back into the field. The team did make up ground throughout the last half of the race to finish ahead of the three crews.
"We were basically dead in the water, but we did a good job of getting ourselves back into the race," Beaver Men's Head Coach Dave Reischman said.
The Beaver women's novice crew finished third in their finals, with a time of 7:10.3. Oregon State finished behind only Washington and California, and finished in front of boats from Washington State, Texas and Michigan State.
"The novice crew did an outstanding job," Owen said. "This was their first event ever together, while they were competing against much more experienced teams."
The men's junior varsity boat finished second in the Petite Finals with a time of 6:30, and the novice boat placed fourth in the Grand Finals at 6:31.
The junior varsity and novice boats rowed well today," Reischman added. "The junior varsity crew did a complete turn around from Saturday and posted a much better time. The novice boat also had an on course problem, but managed to hang together and make a good run at the end of the race."
Oregon State returns to action Sat., April 11 against the University of California at Redwood Shores, Cal.
