Droegemueller, Lipe Awarded Pacific-10 Medals

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State senior gymnast Deanne Droegemueller and senior baseball player Ryan Lipe have been awarded 1997-98 Pacific-10 Conference Medals, league commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday. A Conference Medal is awarded annually to the outstanding male and female student-athlete from each of the in the Pacific-10 Conference schools. The award is based on a combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Droegemueller, the 1998 gymnastics team captain, was the Pac-10 champion on the uneven bars and named All-Pac-10 Conference on the event.
Droegemueller also placed first on bars at the NCAA West Regionals to earn a trip to the 1998 NCAA Championships, where she went on to become a first team All-American on the event. She was also a first team All-American on the balance beam in 1995.
The senior from Maple Grove, Minn., was named a second team Pac-10 All-Academic selection this season after earning honorable mention recogntion the previous two season.
Lipe, a third baseman, hit .324 with 33 runs and 23 RBI in 1998 and was named Pac-10 Northern Division Player of the Week for the week ending March 1. He finished his OSU career with a .306 all-time batting average, 178 hits, 17 home runs, 134 runs and 126 RBI.
A two-time All-Northern Division team pick, Lipe etched his name into the OSU record books, where he is third in career runs scored, fourth in career RBI and sixth in career hits.
Lipe, who would like to become a surgeon, is involved in the Pre-Med Society and the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. The Klamath Falls, Ore., native has received the Aurthur Ashe Sports Scholar Award and is a Pac-10 All-Academic Team honoree as well.
