OSU-UTAH STATE SERIES: Oregon State leads the two-game series 2-0. The Beavers defeated Utah State at Corvallis in 1904 by 45-0 and 24-16 last year at Parker Stadium.
MIKE RILEY: Mike Riley (Alabama, '75) is in his second year as the Beavers' head coach and his second year as a collegiate head coach. Riley has a collegiate career record of 5-10 (.333). Riley was not a rookie head coach when he accepted the OSU position in 1996 for the '77 season. Riley had six previous seasons under his belt as a professional football head coach, four at Winnipeg in the Canadian Football League and two at San Antonio of the World League of American Football. As head coach of Winnipeg, he won two Grey Cup championships. Overall, he had a combined record of 51-41-0 as a professional head coach. Riley spent four years as offensive coordinator at USC prior to becoming head coach at OSU.

OSU-UTAH STATE LAST YEAR: Utah State scored a touchdown on the first play of its initial offensive possession on a 68-yard pass, Matt Sauk to Ricky Brumfield to take a early 7-0 lead. Oregon State tied the game in the first quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by Ricky Walker. The Beavers moved to a 24-10 lead with 5:40 left in the game, but the Aggies made the game interesting in the final five minutes. Utah State's Steve Smith returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown with 3:37 to play. Kicker Brad Bohn missed the PAT to leave OSU with a 24-16 lead. The Aggies then executed an on-side kick and drove to the Beavers' five-yard line where DeMario Brown was stripped of the football by OSU's Jonathan Jackson who also recovered the football with 1:06 left to play to preserve the Beavers' victory. OSU held a 357-340 advantage in total offense. Jones has now been OSU's top defensive point producer in three (Nevada, Baylor, ASU) of the Beavers' four games to date, and he was second in the other game (USC).
QUOTING MIKE RILEY
ON OSU PLAY AGAINST ASU: "There was some outstanding performances by our team defensively against Arizona State. Tim Alexander had nine catches on offense and is really improving all the time and the more he plays the better he will get. The overall summary is that we just made too many mistakes to win a tough football game. Whether it was an assignment mistake, a penalty or five fumbles, however you cut it, against any good football team you can't do that and win."
ON BEAVER RUNNING GAME: "We need to be better from an assignment standpoint. We let too much penetration get into the backfield to get some runs started. I thought Ken Simonton, in the limited running we did do, made some people miss and the yards he did get were well earned by him. There was not a lot of execution in the running game up front. Arizona State made a decision to blitz almost exclusively and make us protect and throw the ball or try to find a crease to run through the blitz packages -- we did not handle that consistently enough to make they pay."
DO YOU EXPECT MORE BLITZING: "I have always felt in blitzing, when I was coaching defense, if someone couldn't handle it they were just going to see more of it. So we have to be sharper and be able to take bigger advantage of people tend to put more pressure and more people up front."
ON UTAH STATE: "They are playing real hard and have played some tough opponents. I thought they were a good football team last year and we are really going to need a good week of practice and make some improvement in some areas in order to win."
ON INJURY SITUATION: "At this point the injury situation appears to be good. I don't think we will get Larry Ramirez back for this week. I don't think we lost anyone from the ASU game."
ACADEMIC AWARDS: Each week during the 1998 football season, U.S. Bank honors a member of the Oregon State football team as the U.S. Bank Academic Player of the Week. Junior right guard Aaron Koch (3.65 GPA) was honored the week of the Nevada game and sophomore center Dustin Janz (3.10 GPA) earned the honor for the Baylor game. Redshirt sophomore guard Jared Cornell from The Dalles (2.92 GPA) earned the honor for the USC game. Keith Heyward-Johnson, a sophomore cornerback from Woodland Hills, CA, earned the honor for the ASU game with a 2.78 accumulate GPA.
OSU IN THE RED ZONE: Oregon State has a percentage of .917 (11 for 12) in the red zone for the season and a perfect 6 for 6 on first-and-goal situations. Meanwhile, the Beavers' defense has allowed opponents to score on 11 of 16 attempts into the red zone, a percentage of .688.
