CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State has hired Kelly Hubbard as an assistant coach on its womens swimming staff, head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny announced Friday. Hubbard replaces Heather Johnston, who left OSU this summer after three seasons to accept an assistant coaching job at Arizona State.
"Im extremely excited to have Kelly as part of our staff," Podkoscielny said. "She has experience with top-notch swimmers with the national team."
Hubbard comes to OSU from the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she has served as an assistant intern coach for the past year. Among the swimmers Hubbard worked with was Amy VanDyken, who won four gold medals in the 1996 Olympic Games and earned three golds at this years World Championships.
"Im really excited," Hubbard said. "Its a great opportunity to be at a program thats in the building stages. Im looking forward to applying a lot of what I learned at the Olympic Training Center to these swimmers and seeing their improvement over the next couple of years."
Prior to working at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Hubbard was an assistant coach for the Twin Cities Swim Team from January, 1995 until August, 1997. During that time, she also worked as a teaching specialist for the physical activity program at the University of Minnesotas School of Kinesilogy.
While at Minnesota, Hubbard also worked as a lifeguard supevisor, a youth program site coordinator, and in special event management at the Minnesota Aquatics Center.
"Shes seen first-hand how to develop and coach world-class swimmers," Podkoscielny said of Hubbard. "We need someone to take over a lot of responsibilities, and shes a perfect fit for our program."
Hubbard is a licensed United States Swimming coach and is a member of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association. She is also certified on the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and as a State of Minnesota EMT.
Hubbard earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1995 from the University of Florida, where she was a swimmer until an injury ended her career. She is currently working on her Master of Education degree at Minnesota.
