OSU men beaten by No. 17 Stanford
October 18, 1998
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Oregon State allowed goals in the 12th and 47th minutes en route to a 2-0 defeat by 17th-ranked Stanford at Maloney Field on Sunday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.
OSU (5-5-1 overall, 1-3-0 MPSF) came to Stanford trying to avoid a Bay Area sweep for the weekend after losing 2-0 at California on Friday, but the Beavers hopes were extinguished by goals from Cardinal players Jaime Clark and Simon Elliott.
Stanford (10-3-0, 3-1-0) had beaten sixth-ranked Washington 2-1 on Friday.
Clarks goal was set up by a free kick in the 12th minute, as he scored off passes from Elliott and Shan Gaw. Elliotts goal came in the 47th minute off a cross by teammate Sean Sylvis.
"We played fairly well," OSU assistant coach Ryan Jorden said. "We gave up one goal off a set piece, then we gave up a goal in the second half when we didnt clear the ball. We just werent able to score again, and thats something weve got to continue to work on."
The Cardinal outshot the Beavers 13-8, while the Beavers committed 19 fouls to Stanfords 12.
"It was a fairly hard-fought game from both sides," Jorden said. "Theyve got a good side. We didnt get it done today."
Beaver captain Fredrik Kummernes returned to action Sunday. He had missed Fridays game with food poisoning, but played all 90 minutes of Sundays game and took three shots.
Oregon State returns home Friday to meet Cal State-Fullerton at 3 p.m., then meets Cal-Irvine on Sunday at noon. Those games begin a five-game homestand for the Beavers.
