OSU wrestlers beat Oregon
February 13, 1999
EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon State 174-pounder Clint Wilson literally hung on for a 4-3 win over Oregons Jesse Culp to give the 14th-ranked Beavers a 22-17 win in Pacific-10 wrestling Friday night at McArthur Court. The victory gives the Beavers (14-7 overall, 6-1 Pacific-10) a three-meet win streak going into their regular-season finale against Brigham Young at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Gill Coliseum.
The win gave OSU a sweep of the seasons Civil War duals, as the Beavers had also beaten Oregon (4-9, 3-6) by a 20-19 score in Corvallis. Oregon State, which took advantage of forfeits by Oregon at 125 and 133 pounds, won at McArthur Court for the first time since 1997.
"I was disappointed with our performance," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "Even the matches we won, we didnt win as decisively as we could have we werent aggressive enough, we didnt put the heat on them and we didnt show enough offense."
The Beavers did have enough to improve their all-time record in Civil War duals to 92-21-4; OSU is 13-3-1 in the last 17 meetings. Oregon States latest win in a series that dates back to 1915 came about because Wilson was able to hang on for dear life.
With the clock winding down and Wilson leading 4-3, Culp was trying to complete a takedown near the edge of the mat but Wilson kept his arms wrapped around Culps arm. That prevented Culp from taking clear control and a stalemate was called with four seconds remaining, to the catcalls of much of a crowd of 1,291.
"It doesnt matter," Wilson said when asked if he thought it was a stalemate. "If the ref thinks it was a stalemate, it was a stalemate."
For someone who had just delivered a win over an arch-rival, Wilson was disappointed. Hed beaten Culp 13-5 in the semifinals of the Southern Oregon Open in November.
"You cant be satisfied with just beating the Ducks, especially when you didnt wrestle that well," Wilson said. "He (Culp) did what he had to do. He tied me up and made me look bad, and he put himself in position to win it."
After a scoreless first period, Wilson had taken a 3-0 lead in the second period with an early escape and then a double-leg takedown. Culp escaped to open the final period, then came back and took Wilson down at the edge of the mat with 1:01 left to tie the score at 3-3. Needing a takedown for the win, Culp immediately let Wilson go on the re-start to put the Beaver up 4-3.
